I have every intention of buying a top notch condition 6906 from a friend pretty soon. So, tell me why I shouldn't buy a Shield instead.

Thanks.

DAO vs DA/SA is my main reason for having a 6906. But I would like a 3913 for the single stack mag like the Shield..

They are two entirely different guns, action wise, size wise etc. In fact, about the only similarity is they are both 9mm. If you want a reasonable comparison it would be the 9c, not the Shield.

6906 is a great all purpose gun, compact enuf for carry and a fine hd pistol as well. If you looking for concealed carry only probably the shield.

Not to get all gun geeky, but my understanding is that the M&P guns being striker fired are more akin to a Single Action semi.

That aside the 6906 is a great pistol. I have one and carried it for my self defense firearm for a time. The only reason I stopped was that I got a number of single stack semi autos that are just a bit lighter to carry.

As others have noted, there really isn't a direct comparison between the two and the closest to a 6906 in the M&P line is the 9c. I had one of those and sold it a few years ago because the 9c doesn't do a thing that the 6906 doesn't do better.

I asked almost the same question in the 3913 vs Shield 9mm thread here: http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-semi-auto-pistols/349627-3913-vs-shield-9mm.html

Then I saw a 6906 on the IAMMO webpage and decided that I had to have one of those too. :D

A lot of great info on the other thread regarding the Third Gen vs the Shield. I have to say that the 6906 is a much wider - and a little longer gun. The 6906 is almost a medium size gun when you factor in the finger rest on the magazine while the Shield is very small.

My 6906 has been a hit with all on the range, especially the ladies for some reason. I have a 5906 15 shot magazine with an adapter in it now and feel like its the perfect medium size gun. Almost like a Smith and Wesson 15 shot double action version of the Colt Combat Commander.

For concealed carry though, I'm thinking 3913 or Shield.

This as well. The 6906 is a DA/SA pistol while the Shield is striker fired with only one consistent trigger pull.

Thanks, y'all. I'm 95% a revolver geek and that's my daily carry, a M642. But I've always liked the old S&W pistols and often used to carry a CS-45, which I still have. But I have a certain use for 9mm pistols that will be better served with a compact pistol like a 6906 than my Browning HP or SIG SP-2022 (ignore the "22" - why they put that on a 9mm I'll never know).

I wasn't sure which model the Shield was in terms of its method of operation/action because I don't really follow the new trends in the M&P pistols so I didn't even realize it was striker fired. Sometimes we all get information gaps, yes? So, I'll stay with the 6906.

GRACIAS!

You "chose well" Skywalker. :D

Seriously, that's my favorite of the 3rd Gens. I carried one for several years on and off duty, you picked a winner.

I don't have a Shield but do have a 40c and a 357c. Was at the range today and I tell 'ya that for the life of me I can't figure out all the hoop-la about a striker fired gun! They're fine and all but I sure do prefer my 3rd gens. I can out shoot either of my M&P's with my 6904...could be the recoil of the calibers and weight of the guns but I sure do love the traditional DA of my 3rd gens. My daughter took my 6906 for her house gun...I offered to get her a Shield or a compact but she could not be swayed!

Here's a shot of the best 9's ever made!:)...minus my much missed but well placed 6906.

For the record, in case anyone is curious about a revolver geek shooting a 6906, and since I am now reliably advised that I "chose well", let me point out that a few years back I used my little CS-45 to take the Texas Concealed Handgun Licensing test.

I scored 248 out of 250. I always drop one out of the ten ring at 15 yards!

When I took the same test to become a CHL instructor I scored 248 with a 1911 and 248 with a long barreled 686. Like I said.....I always drop one out of the ten ring at 15 yards!

Not long ago I was in my LGS looking at a Shield. I pulled out my daily carry, a pre-rail 3913TSW and laid them side by side. Almost identical in size and minimal weight difference.

Here is a photo of my 3953 & my daughter's Shield. The rear of the slide of a 3953 is a bit longer than a 3913, and it is a single stack gun. The overall size, except for the width, would be about identical to a 6906.

I've been there signing for one, making a payment on one, and saw another I couldn't live without and put it on layaway...

6906 every day of the week. The only thing I have found that I like better, and more the wife likes better, is our Sig p938 with houges and extended mag. Replaced trigger with ss one and lighter hammer spring. Makes a sweet trigger pull in a great cc package.

The .40 S&W Shield has quite a smack to it when launching 180 grain bullets. My favorite LGS has spare mags for the Shield, if you can not find them at home.

I would take the shield or better yet a 39xx series but that is just me I did not like the 6906. It did not work for me but if you like then that is what should matter.
