696 forcing cone question

I'm thinking about searching for a 696 and recall reading several reports way back about cracked forcing cones. Was/this an issue with the 696 because of the L-frame more than other models? 696 replacement barrels are nonexistent so having a forcing cone crack spells "end of gun" quickly. Also, any difference in the cone issues between 696 no dashes and -1s? Should I find one, I wouldn't be shooting it excessively, but durability is an issue due to lack of repair/replacement potential. Thanks in advance.

I cant say as to a difference in forcing cones from no dash to -1 guns, but I own a 696 no dash. The forcing cone is thin, to say the least. I also read about some of them cracking, but I only shoot sensible factory level loads in mine. If I need to shoot magnum levels, I break out one of my 629's I am of the opinion that if I dont try to hot rod the cartridge, the forcing cone is a non issue. I currently have appx 1000 rounds thru mine. No issue at all.
Good luck in your quest, as they are rather pricey.

Mine is a dash 1. I believe I am the second owner on this one. It is a shooter as I have no safe queens. As Tom has said don't try to hot rod the cartridge and it will last you a life time!

No difference in the -1 and -2. I know that was not your question but I don't own a no dash.....yet.

Find the 696, inspect it closely and buy it!! I have one and love it.

I like mine. It's a pre-production model and is factory ported.

If you do find one with a a cracked forcing cone it is possible to rebore & re-rifle a 686 tube.

I really do not think it is a issue UNLESS you are running a steady diet of "hot rod" loads in it. I have a -1 that has done well in it's time in the wilds of Alaska. I do not hesitate to leave home WITH it. Kyle
