Student on track yesterday with a new BMW M2. Beautiful car.During the first session the TPMS light comes on and the left rear tire pressure is reading 15psi. Tried to fill it with the tracks compressor but its leaking faster than you can put air into it.Looks to be a small puncture on the crown of the tire.
We decide to remove it but..no jack..no spare and no lug wrench! Just a BMW can of fix a flat and a mini air compressor. Swell. I get a floor jack and an impact gun and remove the tire. We take it to a shop locally near the track but they won't fix it. Great. They can get a tire tomorrow for $650. No thanks. I decide to bring it to my shop about 1/2hr away and I plug the tire and another 1/2hr later we are back on track.

I miss the days of spare tires and lug wrenches. I did get a $100 tip though:)

The way the car companies look at it, if you'll pay thousands of dollars to have a fast, light version of one of their cars, you can afford AAA. I don't think that's the way it should be, but the number of people on this earth who care what I think can be counted on one hand. Most appropriately by a raised middle finger.:D

My how times change......

Remembering when my WWII combat veteran dad paid cash for a new '92 Crown Vic.

Drove it home and was showing it off to the grandkids. Popped the trunk and he saw that space-saver, donut spare tire.

You could see the smoke coming from his ears.

He slammed the trunk lid, then drove back to the dealership. They found him a full-size spare and almost gave him the dealership.

Reminded me of the scene from Wyatt Earp in Tombstone at the train station "You tell 'em I'm comin'..."

Just purchased a 2024 Acura RDX ASpec Advance SH-AWD last week...

This is the top-of-the-line RDX model with all the bells and whistles. Also comes standard only with a fix-a-flat / compressor kit. I did get the dealership to throw in the spare tire which was a $440 "option" as part of my deal.

Curious as I also have a mid-range 2024 Acura MDX A-Spec SH-AWD (not Advanced) and this one came standard with a spare tire. FWD trims of this model do not. Also, the top-of-the-line MDX Type S does not include a spare.

Need a scorecard....

Does no one else check out a car, see that it lacks a critical feature, and say, "This is not the car for me..." and walk away?

I guess it's like the guys who buy a new pistol, take it home, and weeks later note something they should have noticed at first glance if they'd really been looking.

Very few cars come with spares today, especially those with sporting intentions... Mostly a question of space, and weight.

Glad you were able to get him back on track. We had a puncture on track back when we had our ZL1. Fortunately, it was one of the street tires I was trying to burn up. I had a second set of wheels with track tires so it didn't end our day.

The run flat tires on my C7 then my C8 where never an issue. Discount Tires fixed 4 holes on one tire on my C7 and two on my C8. When I replaced the tires on my C7 went to Discount Tire and added their replacement warranty which worked well. A couple times I drove the tires with less than 5 lbs all the way to Discount Tire for repair or replacement. If you replace your run flat tires make sure to add a great replacement warranty.

We've added AAA as a contingency plan for vehicle problems. Did this mostly to provide an extra measure of safety for my better half until I can get to her if she's somewhere alone with a flat or other vehicle issue.

70K for a car to begin with is nuts. No spare or wrench compounds the problem. What good is AAA if you get a nonrepairable wound in your tire? It is also a safety issue. To me that product is defective at the time of sale. Also, 650 for a tire is nuts.

Consumers put themselves at a disadvantage when they even consider buying such products.

Rant over:D

I guess you can get AAA to tow you home or to a shop ? Just a guess ..

If you want to play, you gotta pay.
I bought an aftermarket spare and accouterments for close to $600. I could have not bought a modern muscle car and just drove my truck, but why punish myself to spite Ford (mustang)?
Had it for just less than a year and makes me happy. What’s that worth to an old guy that finds happiness is a very elusive thing?

Keep a "Slime" tire plug kit, needle nose pliers and small air compressor in every car we have, has saved us a few times over the years.

Haven't had to even remove the tire in a few cases, just turn the wheel to find the nail / screw, remove and plug.

Today's consumers don't select an automobile, they choose which dream to hang onto based on advertising BS. Then they don't purchase the car, they buy the payment plan. While doing so they willingly participate in the tag team match involving the salesman, sales manager, and finance manager as they spend several hours working him into a corner until all resistance is gone and the papers are signed.

I prefer to play the game by my rules, show up with financing pre-approved by my credit union, tell the sales rep what I'm looking for and if it is in stock I tell them what I am willing to pay. When the inevitable game starts I tell them I am leaving now but please call me if someone here is capable of saying Yes or No on the offer, no other conversation will be necessary.

Real simple, do you want a solid deal now or do you want to watch me go somewhere else?

No spare, no jack, no lug wrench? That would all be included in the proposed deal. Take it or leave it.

No, it doesn't work every time, but it works most of the time and is usually good for at least 20% savings (not to mention the hours saved from the tag team match).

It's about probability of tire failure. Back in the dawn of time, punctures were routine. Everybody knew how to change a tire and had a spare with tools in the trunk. I haven't had to change a tire in decades. Tires are phenomenal these days. Still, absent a spare you're in real jam when you do finally have a flat.

There's not much I can do with my weekend ride except call for a flatbed. Ground clearance is near nothing. Couldn't fit a scissor jack underneath. Front and rear tires are different sizes and directional to boot. I suppose a donut tire could work, but I doubt there's anything made that would fit over the brake rotors and have adequate diameter. It would look something like a mountain bike tire.

Have had 4 Vettes with run flat tires, and they always got me home. No jack/ spare in the car, and the cars cost more than $70k.

One time hit a chunk of 2'' angle iron and it made a huge none repairable hole. Those tires can go a long distance and above the speed they quote with a hole like that.:D Got me home and the next day to the tire shop.

My wife’s last car was a 2018 Audi Q7. Same, no spare or jack. But at least it came with run flat tires. Pirelli IIRC. Here new Bronco is extreme opposite. 32” AT hanging on the back

I've got a 5 series No jack no nothing, except "Run-flat" tires. As I am to old and beat up to be changing a tire roadside it works just fine for me..
Glad ya got your student taken care of. I'll be the first to admit that some BMW drivers can be Real Jerks, but for the most part we Try and take care of the people who Try and take care of us.
