I just tried a new load for my 5906 using 4.3 gr of 700x powder. I fired into a plastic bucket filled with red clay @ 12 yards. Speer 115 gr JHP. It was very accurate, not real mild but shouted power. I like this load for this pistol. Expansion was very good.

You might want to take a look at "Pet Loads" by Ken Waters. Although somewhat dated, Ken presents a thorough discussion of 9mm reloading as well as descriptions for a number of loads.

I understand there are lots of loads out there, I just pointed out my trial with a powder that sat dormant in my locker for some time...I wanted to share that with others who seldom use that powder. So thanks for that input, sorry for not being helpful. Have a good day.

Arm - I picked up a bootle of 700X just before the Covid crisis hit. So, your results are interesting to me. I bought that bottle as part of my ongoing search to find a low density load that would do a good job of filling a 9mil case as much as possible; with the goal of having enough powder in the cases to maybe protect against bullet setback. Did you see any signs of high pressure with your load?

GeoJelly, No pressure signs at all, I believe it is well below max load. It just worked very well in the 5906. Hollow point expansion was very good.

Since started reloading in the late 70s', always been a fan of the IMRs' 700X SR7625 800X SR4756 SR4759. Back then they were under the Dupont label. The Remington reloading guides always provided the recipes needed.

700-X has been my 12ga powder for skeet loads since the 70s. Naturally, I tried it in various .45, 9mm, and .38 loads to see if I could use it instead of HP38. My most-used load was 3.5gr with a cast LRN in 9mm.
I eventually went back to HP38, and later, Titegroup, for 9mm.
The only problem I found with 700-X was it was worse than Titegroup for having small charges, and being quick to go over pressure with small increases. The current Hodgdon site lists 4.2 gr as MAX for 9mm 115gr jacketed, which is about 1080fps from a 4" barrel.

This is why I do not use this powder for most pistol charges any more. It gets spikey real quick, and the margin for error is real small.

Doesn't meter well, extremely versatile and one of the mo$t THRIFTY powders out there...!

I like 700-X: If you weigh your loads carefully (or even use LEE dippers?) there's not too much exposure to catastrophic errors: after all, a double charge is a double charge, no matter HOW it is delivered. I often dip into a balance beam scale and charge 50 at a time into a loading tray: one careful glance would normally catch any missing, short or double charges.

Cheers!

P.S. The automated powder charge/scales seem to have no problems with delivering accurate 700-X or 800-X loads as well.

Your load is listed as a maximum load in one of my manuals by Speer at 1067 fps but............
in the same manual Sierra uses more powder for 1200 fps.

Bullet OAL can change load pressures, so do follow the data.

Lyman 50th lists 4.5 as max load, load I used was below that and worked well. No harm done

I fired into a plastic bucket filled with red clay @ 12 yards.

Now I know what to carry against attack by a Golem.:D

I haven't reloaded 9 yet, but will shortly.

Interesting that Hodgdon cuts off most of their 9 loads at or below 33 kpsi when the SAAMI limit is 35, or 38 for +P. Maybe says something about the pressure curves or what they think of reloader's quality control.

I don't know if it the company digging a certain powder or just lack of testing but I noticed that a lot of manuals cut some powders short of a full or even medium heavy load, fps wise, in their manual data.

Mostly when I have tested those powders to a lot higher pressure, than just a target load.

Another good reason for more books !!
