940 questions ! Help...

Larry,

How long ago did you buy your 940 and have the cylinder replaced by S&W?

Does it extract all brands of ammo now? (Or was the original problem something different than extraction?)

Headknocker, do you still shoot 9mm in he 38 super cylinder?

YES!!
It now fires either 9mm Para or 38 Super..
I use mostly 9mm for range use & have only fired a few boxes of 38 Super through it at the range, I carry a Cor-Bon 38 Super +P 125gr 38 Super..
Wish I could find an extra 940 cylinder so I could turn my 642 into a 942..

Wonder if that's Complete with extractor/ejector?
Prfessor has had one made up & I want to have the 3rd M942..

Those grips are boot grips made expecialy for the Centennials, Note the Higher horn that would hand over the frame on a Bodygaurd or Chiefs Special, This allows you to grasp higher on the frame than you would normaly be able to, this lessens recoil & increases shootability..
The Middle grip is the factory grip on that 342Ti, It's a Dymondwood a laminate..
I need another set of Spegels & may opt for something from Kim Ahrend or Eagle for my 342
There's a Big Gunshow in Indy Today & hopefully I'll find something Nice There!!

Thank you, for the reply. Those are beautiful grips and I'd love to get a pair for my 940.

Oh boy, my memory isn't what it used to be, but if I had to guess, I'd say it was something like six years ago that I bought that little revolver. If I am remembering correctly, the original (and only) problem was that some types of cartridges simply wouldn't fit! That is how I discovered the problem. I didn't even need to fire it to discover the problem.

I agree with most everything that has been said by Gary, my 940-1 will stick with certain ammo, if you clean the cylinder that helps. I wasn't aware of the honing option, good to know. I have owned a bunch of j frames, and this has the best trigger hands down, only thing that comes remotely close is my 640, and my former 640-1. You got a good price, I paid more than that plus shipping plus transfer fee. Don't worry about it, enjoy it. If you want another 9mm, I have a 547 I'll part with for $700, if that helps put the price in perspective.

"Most Everything"??

I have the cylinder Hones back in my posetion waiting for the Next Forum Meber who wants to use them..
Which 547 do you have Ed333??
I already have a 4" 547..
Not that I have $700 sitting around anyhow..
I think a 3" 547 would make a great midsized carry piece..
Thanks & Enjoy You All..

'Most Everything' is the functional equivalent of everything, the way I talk.
My 547 is a 4" also. The 700 figure is a bit less than what I have in it, and I would include extra grips and five HKS speedloaders.
The only 3" barrel I have is on a model 36, and I do like that. I would like to try more ( I wish my m.67 was 3"), but the current prices on 3" models are scaring me off.

Hey 547s Go For way More than $700 @ Some Auctions, There's a Buy it Now on Gunbroker now for $1200 from you guessed it..Won't Say Name..
I'll see this guy in about three weeks in Lexington KY..
If You ever want to try the Cylinder Hones Let me Know.. I'll send em out to you Ed333
Good Luck with the 940 & 547..

How do I get my 940s cylinder honed to fit the 38 super?
Would I still use the same moon clips for the 9mm and the 38 super?
This seems like fun to get it ready for 38s
Please let me know details!
Peter.

The Search Engine Here doesn't seem to go back very far anymore, probobly due to age & alot of bandwidth..
You use the same moonclips for 38 Super as for 9mm para, I suppose you could even have it reamed to .356TSW too..But Why?
38 Super is expensive as is all the others, most shooting will still be done with 9mm anyhow..
I also had my Cylinders charge Holes beveled when I had the reaming done.. Expert Work..
I had my Cylinder Reamed by David Manson of Manson percision reamers, He's a Forum member Here..His Compony makes alot of reamers out in the market & sells to Brownell's..
When David Did my Cylinder he made a new reamer for it & would probobly be very happy to use it again if He hasn't already..
I'll give the Link to His webpage which I believe is down for Maintenance but it gives his email address.

Thank you! Yes I am aware that 38 super is costly ammo..
But it would be nice to have the option for use. I will give it a day or two before I email him!
With the added pressure if the 38, do you think that there would be any issues with the gun down the road?
Peter

There's several other members here who have done the same convertion, also Mr. Manson has reamed several 940 cylinders to 38 Super..
I also haven't noticed any loss of accuracy, My 940 is very accuarte & has one of the best triggers of any handgun I've ever seen DA/SA whatever, very smooth..
I haven't shot more than a couple of boxes of 38 Super through mine & haven't noticed any trouble at with it..
Enjoy!!

Thinking out loud, doesn't this mean you would be unable to shoot 9mm any more? Doesn't the 9mm cartridge meet a ledge in the chamber which holds it in place and determines headspace? Or am I confusing it with the 547 method?

The Rounds headspace off the moonclip..
Of course you can't shoot 9mm without moons after the reaming..
It's a Great Convertion..
Contact david manson He can give you alot of specs about the 38 Super Reaming..

WARNING WARNING WARNING!!

Do not attempt firing WW 9x23 in the Super chamber

YOUR cylinder will fragment! The 9x23 operates at the 52K level and will blow up your very non-factory firearm!

A certain online Smithie had some very public failures of his new 9x23 J frames

I'd like to see the info on these 9x23 failures..
I would think the 356TSW round being S&W offered it in the PC940s to Be OK..
9mm & 38 Super for me in my 940+..
Enjoy!!
Gary/Hk

No problemo Gary, the smith is Dane Burns from gunsmith.com

Did you note the pressures the 9x23 runs at? Way more than Super, btw the Super brass is gonna bulge a bit from the fat 9mm chamber. No biggie safety wise since it's obviously supported but to a reloader that bulge is tough to size out.
