What is the difference between the two pistols? How much longer is the handle of the 945 then the 1911? etc

Depends. They made a lot of different versions of the 945.

I'll focus on the 5" Match version of the 945, since that's the only one I have.

It's not a modified 1911, it's a unique gun built from the ground up. Magazines, barrels, grips and small parts will not interchange. The grip angle is different and the 945 feels much larger in hand than the dimensions would indicate. I have big hands and the best way I can describe the feel is rock solid and anchored. If you're accustomed to a 1911, you'll instinctively point low with the 945.

Mine is a late RSA prefix 945-1. Fit and finish is impeccable, the trigger pull is crisp and it's extremely accurate. Slide to frame fit is as precise as any high end 1911 I've handled; there's virtually no play.

One word of caution... If you buy one, be patient when reassembling. It can be tricky getting the barrel back into the spherical bushing. Sit down, take your time and don't try to force it. When you get it aligned properly, the barrel will slide right in.

Mine is a 945-2 , late model . Mine didn't come in the case , just a soft case from PC . As stated , mine is also a one hole gun . If you're not a believer , find someone that has one that will let you shoot it . They are unbelievably accurate , as are a lot of the older PC semis . I have 2 45Recons , which are not at that level , but are awesome guns . The dangerous part is shooting one . They're like Lays potato chips , you can't stop at one .

Oops, mistaken identity ^^^

As far as I know, S&W never made a 945 dash-2.

That 945 is absolutely beautiful. Best gun porn I've seen in years.

Dimensions are very similar, but numbers are misleading.

As I told Alex by PM, it's a completely different gun in hand. If he would like to shoot mine, the offer still stands...

I have a 945-1... while not identical in dimensions, the gun's lower end (SA lock work) is basically that of a 1911 in design, but the barrel does not use the 1911 style pivot link, and instead uses the later John Browning design of a barrel cam and frame lugs.

Out of curiosity, I discovered that a spare Wilson Combat 1911 sear spring I had for my Gold Cup fits and works beautifully in my 945 after a leg on the original one broke.

You ask about the "handle" size.... it's slightly larger and at a different angle than the 1911, the grip panel of a 945 at it's widest point about 3/16" wider and 1/6" longer than a 1911 grip panel. The grip panels are also not as thick on a 945. The feel is definitely different, while at the same time familiar, if you have a 1911.

The top end (slide) is basically a Performance Center re-work of 4506 slide.

So the 945 is unique in that it's a hybrid of two pistol designs.

It's a perfect playmate for my Series '70 Gold Cup and is just as accurate, if not perhaps a bit more, with the Briley barrel bushing and Performance Center match grade barrel.

OP to answer your question the 945 is more angled and thinner than the 1911 frame. I owned a 945 no dash and it shot good and had cool factor but could not justify keeping it since my 845 ran laps around it . Same with my semi custom 1911s in the same price point.
