9mm 147 grain bullet accuracy load

I've got some Penn Bullet cast lead 147 grain truncated cone 9mm bullets-- what would be a good powder to use for low smoke and about 900-950 fps velocity? I currently have Titegroup, American Select and 231.

Power Pistol should meet your requirements. I easily exceed your velocity requirement with 147 gr. jacketed bullets in my 940. Pressures are low enough that I get easy extraction. I would be wary of 231, at least in my revolver; while it may work, the disaster factor would be higher with the heavier bullets. All my cast bullet work with the 9mm has been with 124 gr. bullets though.

In all of my Sig P226s I use AA#7 and the maximum load for near 1000fps velocity.

It is like having 4, M637s in 38spl +P in one magazine! Very accurate and real thumpers!

I second the use of Accurate #7. It's about the only powder I use for 147-gr and I've tried a lot of good powders. Work up to somewhere in the low- to mid-six range. I think you'll be amazed at the accuracy and soft recoil impulse that #7 gives you.

I use W231 to load 147 gr lead (TCFP) bullets for my Ruger SP 101 revolver, Berreta 92FSC semi and Marlin Camp 9 carbine. I like it allot. No Crono data but it's zippy enough to knock down steel plates at our informal shoots. Good reliability, moderate recoil, shoots POA. I have had no issues at all with this load. I'd have to check my load data (at home) latter to quote you what charge I use. Let me know if you want it.

I have not used lead bullets in my 9mm for many years. I have used American Select with 124 gr. jacketed bullets but actually prefer WSF. The W-W 14th Edition reloading manual lists the following for 147 gr. cast lead FP in 9mm:
3.3 gr. W-231 = 865 fps = 29000 psi
3.5 gr. W-231 = 905 fps = 32100 psi (Maximum)
A number of local shooters use the 3.5 gr. W-231 load with excellent results. It's a soft shooting load.

Just checked my data. I'm in line with TSquared. I'm using 3.3 gr of W231 under a 147 gr lead truncated cone with great results. No need to look elsewhere for my needs.

Think I may try some 147 gr bullets. I know that AA7 works well with 125 gr lead bullets in 9MM.

With cast bullets, most smoke comes from the lube, not the powder. I have never had much luck with lead in 9mm. I do prefer 231 in 9mm.

As a follow-up, using Accurate #7 and 147-gr XTPs at MAX charge is amazingly accurate and still has a very soft recoil. Plus, I get almost 1150-fps over the chronograph with a G34. Pretty potent.

In my mind, (and remember things have gotten lost up there in that vast void) that is a win/win.

Having 12-20 rounds of ammo like that and how can anyone say they aren't well armed?

Think about the most carried BUG in the world, figuratively speaking, the 38spl 5 shot revolver. Load it with some +P loads, and hit the streets. For years cops and civilians alike have thought themselves well armed with that combination.

Imagine, having the equivalent of 2 to 4 of them on you and in only one gun! I like the idea myself.

FWIW, I've found Kead bullets to be VG in the smoke and fouling department. I'm running their 147 gr 9mm product in both my Ruger SP101 revolver and Beretta 92FSC. Unfortunately, Kead is months behind in their orders :-(

This has been my standard 9mm cast bullet load for too many years to remember.

147gr cast truncated nose bullet (from local supplier)
Mixed brass of Federal/Remington/Winchester (mostly once fired)
Winchester SP primer (tried Wolff recently and it works well too)
3.6gr of Winchester 231 powder
OAL of 1.155"

From my 5" 1911A1 this load averages 900 FPS and from my Glock 19 with LWD barrel it averages 890 FPS.

This is my "do it all" load for all my 9mm pistols.
It is very accurate and totally reliable in all my 9mm pistols.

I am looking for load data using the Bear Creek moly coated bullet as well.

I have the following powder:

AA#5, SR4756 and Power Pistol

Would like a load sub-1,000 FPS that will still cycle the action.
