I never worry what my 9mms ( S&W shield & Sig. 229R ) group at 25 yards as self defense situations almost always occur closer than 25 yards anyway ......

While true, where does your practice routine leave you should you find yourself in a situation outside your concept of defensive handgun use? Practice should be challenging, not comforting.

I'll also note that if you're paying attention to your surroundings, you can influence how a confrontation takes place. The where & when are up to the other party. If you're really on top of your game, you're gone before the confrontation takes place.
