I just picked up a 4006 today, very nice indeed. Its quite a heavy piece of steel.

Are 9mm barrels available for the S&W 4006? I understand that the gun is built on a 9mm frame, I am guessing it should be straightforward to change the barrel out to change caliber?

Has anyone done this? I read on stoppingpower that a 357 sig barrel was available for this gun: http://www.stoppingpower.net/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=1852

Any info would be appreciated. If this gun cannot be configured for 9mm, that's ok. I just think the 9mm would be a nice light round for a lady to shoot in this gun. My wife is sensitive to recoil.

The 9mm barrel might fit, but the extractor is setup for .40 S&W case which is a larger diameter then a 9mm round case. Just buy her a nice 5906 9mm firearm which is the same frame. There are a lot of used ones out there for around $350.

The .357sig would be a pretty straight trade out, but I haven't figured out what the advanage is yet. The other problem is that 4000 and 5900 mags do not work in each others gun. Then the there's the problem of no one making barrels for the third generation guns that are cheaper than another gun itself.

WRONG. You cannot change the caliber by only changing the barrel. The breech face is not the same nor is the extractor.

I have a 4043 that I sent to Bar-Sto and had a .357 Sig barrel fitted. Very easy conversion since the breach face is the same for both rounds (same magazines too). For a .40 to 9mm conversion you'd be best fitting a 9mm slide, barrel and recoil spring to the .40 cal frame and of course you'd have to use 59 mags.

The .357 sig seems to create a little more slide speed so I use a heavier recoil spring when shooting that cartridge. I also plan on having the factory Novaks changed to include the new Novak adjustable rear to take care of the POA issues.

Even this may not work as I seem to remember that S&W 3rd gen auto frames have tracks in the mag well to match bumps or dimples in the mags to prevent inserting the wrong caliber mag in the wrong caliber gun.

This is a big problem with our civil ninja, who have a terrible habit of dropping 9mm sub gun rounds into 40 caliber pistols (yeah, I know we gun guys are horrified, but these ninja are not for the most part "gun guys), which of course allows the 9mm to slide into the barrel and stop creating an obstruction. S&W took action to prevent this, but the ninja did not buy S&Ws and instead had and still have lots of blow-ups.
