9mm in ported barrel

I don't have your particular pistol but typically lead bullets leave deposits in the ports that can build-up & be difficult to remove.
More importantly, since the port is cut thru the barrel & slide, on an automatic pistol, those deposits can get inside & between the barrel & slide which could end up interferring with their operation.
I'm sure with frequent thorough cleanings this can be mitigated allowing you to use up your cast lead bullets.
Hopefully someone else can share their first-hand experiences with a similar configuration.

Just speculation, based on shooting mostly cast bullets in a number of (unported) handguns...
There's no getting around a carbon residue using ammunition with either jacketed bullets or cast bullets. With cast bullets using a conventional lubricant, there will be an additional residue from the lube. Severe lube buildup might present a problem and affect gun functioning. However, routine cleaning should prevent this.
I don't use powder coated bullets and have no idea if that coating process would affect things differently.

One would think S&W would have a ammo warning if any danger
is involved with shooting ammo that might cause damage to the shooter or weapon?
I never cared for ported barrels.
They are bad if you are bird hunting with dogs near by and
they are terrible when fired in the dark.

I agree. I'm unfamiliar with an M&P 9mm and don't know whether such a gun is factory ported or done aftermarket. There are drawbacks to ported barrels, certainly, but there may also be some advantage that I am unaware of.
Aside from increased blast, the ports require an additional step in the cleaning process, regardless of the type bullet used.

Those ported guns sure look cool, but they make a mess.

There is nothing in the M&P manual that I have about the bullet type in either the regular pistol or the Pro Ported version.
Might be a good idea for the OP to call S&W customer service and verify that lead is OK.

I have shot lead bullets in a ported revolver but not a semi-auto. Some lead dies build up in the porting but it's easily removed.
