9MM SEMI AUTO CARBINE

I AM HEARING NUMEROUS COMMENTS FROM FRIENDS AND FOLKS AT LGS THAT S&W IS GOING TO GET ON THE 9MM CARBINE TRAIN. THE RUMORS ARE THAT IT WILL BE IN THE M&P MODE...SOMETHING LIKE 15-9. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS?

There is a market for pistol caliber carbines, I always thought S&W should bring back the Model76 in a semi auto carbine using M&P or 59 mags

Well it's likely as pistol caliber carbine is a class in steel challenge and a provisional division for USPSA. Seeing as Smith has been right up on the curve with keeping their gear up to date

I love my beretta 9mm carbine. I'd be interested to see what S&W could develop. If they can keep it at the $400 that I paid for my beretta.

If they go with a locking bolt design instead of straight blowback, they will definitely fill a void that's got a Sig MPX hanging in the corner.

I'm very happy with my CX4 Storm, but straight blowback is not great for suppressor use.

3 Gun Nation, USPSA, and Steel Challenge(part of USPSA) all have divisions now.

Aside from the Sig, JP at 1500.00 is tthe hot ticket.

If Smith can make one that runs, it will be a home run....

Hope they do it! Can't find the Keltec sub2000, hate the space age look of the CX4 Storm, and while a Hi-Point is functional, they're just too cheap for me to buy. If they made an M&P carbine that took M&P mags (screw the AR based idea), it would be a big hit. Smith would start selling 33 round M&P mags like Glock does and I would buy one immediately.

Not to mention it would be a perfect companion to the M&P pistol and would surely spur sales of those. One magazine for rifle and pistol is always a good thing. Surprised Glock never did that. Guess they just think making essentially the same pistol for 30 years would never get old.

Fellow CX4 owner- just an fyi, I clocked Liberty Civil Defense ammo from my Storm, and it was sending the 50gr 9mm fragmenting ashtray downrange at 2650fps.

If your range shooting involves blowing up water jugs, you definitely need to see it for yourself. That combo blows things up more violently than any rifle combo I've shot.

As for AR based design, heck no. Pistol calibers ought to have mags in the grip or bullpupped. Any other design with mag in front of grip is a waste of space (Calico excluded)

Thank you! I don't see the point of a 9mm semi auto carbine with a 16" barrel. Juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Well, the CX4 Storm is 30" overall length with a 16" barrel. It's a great configuration since the mag goes into the grip. Brings the barrel back.

Lighter bullets gain more velocity from the longer barrel.
As mentioned above, the 50gr 9mm is essentially on par with those popular 11.5" ARs with the difference being only bullet shape. And I don't shoot the CX4 at distances where the **** ballistic coefficient comes into play.

Otherwise, for more traditional ammo, it doesn't sound very impressive to gain 200fps between a 4" handgun and a 16" carbine, I agree. But it does give you a very very easy to shoot package.

460 ft-lb with 124gr HST
480 ft-lb with 124gr Gold Dot
500 ft-lb with 124gr NATO
540 ft-lb with 115gr Silvertip
770 ft-lb with 50gr Civ Def

For reference, 124gr HST and Gold Dot are both 300 ft-lb and 350 ft-lb from 3" and 5", respectively.

I do agree that it's easy to shoot. But everything beyond 8" or so is roughly the same velocity. A 8" SBR makes some sense. I understand NFA makes it tough to really hit the sweet spot with a 9mm carbine. I've considered building a rifle with a 11" barrel and a 5.5" permanently attached flash hider...that's about the only way I'd do a 9mm AR or MP5 style weapon.

Everything I've read/seen about the Liberty rounds is they are poor penetrators and grenade at just a few inches. Pumping them up to 2600fps out of a rifle would only enhance that. Heck...probably every 9mm JHP would mushroom too quickly out of a rifle. It sure would be good for blowing up melons though!

Yeah...I'm one of those "efficient cartridge/gun combo" aficionados. I don't own a 16" AR or a magnum snub

Hi Points are too cheap to buy and so are the Kel Tecs.
That's why I own both.
