Hello,

Bought my 1st gun last year, a S&W 617 (22lr) 4". Had to send it back for repair as cylinder was locking up. Got it back and all seems good. Now I want to buy my 1st "big boy gun".

Is the above gun a good choice? I will mainly use for a range gun. Thought the longer barrel will help with accuracy. Has this gun proved to be reliable? Thanks in advance

The choices in the Pro 9mm M&P are 4.25" bbl with night sights or the 5" bbl with FO sights. I have both.
I use the 5" bbl version for IDPA/SSP and USPSA/Production and have had no problems with the gun. I mostly use minor power 124gr Precision Delta reloads. Without getting up to look it up, I'd say the round count is somewhere around 20,000.

The 4.25" version with the night sights is more suitable for carry (short enough to sit down in a vehicle). I've used it in a few club matches, but the round count is more like 2,000. No issues with either gun, and the triggers have settled just above 4#. Being an old revolver shooter, I like the Pro triggers fine, although they were a little gritty brand new. All I use on the trigger assemblies is CRC spray silicone. Don't put oil or grease in the action or striker channel because it collects grit quickly.

The longer sight plane and FO sights help with speed on the range, but both guns I have are about equally mechanically accurate.

I have looked at the XDM as well. Sorry, I guess I should have just said "longer barrell" as I wasn't sure if it was 5 or 5.25. thanks

As a range gun, the M&P Pro is a good choice. I come from a 1911 background, so the striker fire trigger took some getting used to. I upgraded it with an Apex FSS and RAM kit.

I've run everything from production and reloads, FMJ, JHP, 115gr and 124gr ammo through it without a hitch. Round count is no where near what OKFC05's is, which is a testament in itself on the Pro's reliability.

The M&P Pro 9mm in 5" is a very good choice. I have three M&P's and like them all. In order of purchase; .40 Pro 4.25", Shield 9mm & Pro 9mm 5". The Pro 9 is my IDPA gun. Installed the Apex CAEK including RAM and really like the action. Trigger is smooth as silk and breaks at an average of 3.5 lbs. In my book the top two striker fire pistols are M&P and Glock. I personnaly do not own a Glock but my brother does and he likes them well. He shoots the G34 for IDPA and packs his G19 for carry.

Have you thought about .45 cal? My favorite cal! Yes big boy gun that's easy to handle. George
