On vacation visiting my mother, and stopped by an estate sale (not an auction). They had a small box of odds and ends teacups that my mom saw a couple she wanted. They were unwrapped on top and there were more (15 to be exact) wrapped and padded with old newspaper. The auction company didn't want to sell them separately, they offered $10.00 for the whole box, which my mother paid. She found a couple more in the box she wanted for her collection as she unpacked and the screamed and called me over.

S&W Model 36 wrapped in newspaper, needing a good cleaning.
Serial number is J517xxx. I believe it dates out around 1977.
I am very happy giving my mother $10.00 for it.

What a find... shaking my head in disbelief that someone could
let that slide past notice yet can totally understand how it happens.

Great karma on you for visiting mom, her idea visiting the sale?

Shut the front door!!!! It's good someone gets a break now and then.

I'm so jealous of 36 owners...... :)

It's gonna be Mother's Day, so ... open your wallet and give her a crisp $100 bill. If momma ain't happy, no one's happy!

I wonder what other guns were tucked away in that house...

Wanna make a 2000% profit on it right now? I'll even pay shipping and FFL fees ;)

Nice score. I've found some pretty decent bargains, but nothing like that. That one has got to be the best buy of 2017.

Talk about being in the right place at the right time! By the looks of it it probably had been stored in that box for many years.

Congratulations! What are the odds of that? It is a good thing for you that Mom did not want to keep it! Bob

It may show up as stolen if the owner misses it. Get a letter from your mother describing how she acquired it.

It is stolen. And his mother with or without a letter stole it, even without knowing it. The only thing to do is to bring it back to where she bought the cups and explain to the owners what happened. They may or may not decide to keep it, or sell it for a fair price. I wouldn't offer anything for it, then, it's receiving stolen property.

Southern states don't generally have registration other than the original 4473 at the retailer, so we don't really know if its stolen or not. But perhaps you should run it by the local PD and get them to run the number just to be safe. It may indeed have been hidden under those cups for a reason.

No to rain on the parade, but I was thinking the same thing as the last few posts, I would be very leery of a find like that. Tools, toys, a watch not so much, but a gun in a box marked tea cups would make me uneasy. I wouldn't want to put my 2nd Amendment rights into jeopardy over a $400 gun.

Great hiding place

Sound like the owner had used a GREAT hiding place.

A "little old lady" hiding her gun with her teacups - why not ??

Bekeart

Obviously a mistake. The honorable thing would be to make it right. Jumping up and down and taking joy in a mistake like that is a bit embarrassing as a gun enthusiast. You can be forgiven if you return it and tell us what happens. There is no " $10.00 Model 36."

Its not stolen. The mom bought a box and its contents at an estate sale. The sellers should have checked each box.

I was actually surprised it took so many posts before the every silver lining has a grey cloud posts began.

Enjoy your new gun.

Do you really think they intended to sell a gun with some china? Really.
