My step daughter & husband live in a town North of Pittsburgh called Butler. A couple nights ago their back porch lights came on & there was a black bear on the porch mooching the suet from the bird feeder. That's not exactly a sight one sees around here very often, but they have woods & farm land around their property. She's an amateur photographer. I said send me a picture. Blank stare, "I never thought of taking a picture." I suggested she get a trail camera in case it comes back. Otherwise, as I've heard here a thousand times, "pictures or else it didn't happen!"
I just thought it was pretty cool.

Photo's of Bears are interesting ...

Take up Bear Watching ... and / or ...

Relocate feeders just a bit farther away from the house .

You could also set up ... Bear Feeders and get some realy good photo's ! :D

Good luck with the bear problem ... my feeders only had squirrels and a raccoon ... a Live Trap fixes them ...
but Bears ... Oh My !

I know that feeling!
When you see it, shoot, shoot!
When I saw that unusual object sticking up over a hill, I’m thinking get closer.
And I was heading toward it.
But when I looked down at the road then back up,
It was gone!
Up in Utah - See these Wild Donks standing on colorful ground.
Shot with short lens on camera.
Went down aways, changed to long lens.
Came back. No Joy!
They gone!IMG_1159.jpeg

Bear don't need to be feed but will gladly seek out the protein that bird seed and suet offer, house to house, often teaching their young the same thing. Up here in the northeast it is a constant problem and unfortunately many of us can not feed birds until winter. They will get into sheds, camps and even vehicles once they associate structures with food. If you have bear around, pull your feeders in and hopefully neighbors will do the same. If you contact the PA Game Commission I'm sure they will tell you the same thing. But they are cool to see!

This was the last night we had our feeders out:

I am one that believes birds in summer have adequate feed. They may need augmented feeding in the winter. Bears will seek out any sources of fat left near a human dwelling.

It is an unfortunate fact that teaching bears to associate dwellings with food too often has a bad ending. Usually for the bear but for pets and occupants too.

Yeah I pull my feeders and let the birds eat bugs in the warm weather; that’s their job. I don’t want my dog getting slashed to death. About once every year or two one will make an appearance in PGH and the Game Commission will trap it for relocation.

A buddy of mine has a place in the foothills of Mt. Spokane, his property is bordered by State Park. After putting up a game camera he was amazed at what was crossing his property on a nightly basis. Needless to say he has modified the lighting of his back parking area in case someone needs to go out at night to drive anywhere, its like a ball park out there. He sent me a picture of his "barn cats" that has two young cougars lounging on the grass of his yard, yesterday sent me a picture of two of his resident bears one of which is a brilliant cinnamon shade that may be gracing his wall this fall. So many deer, elk and moose pictures its not even challenging. His mineral block is seventy five yards from his porch, none of his neighbors mind his big muzzle loader going off from time to time. My wife is a city girl and I will admit to being spoiled by the fact I am fifteen minutes away from the stuff I might need including my rifle club down on the river, where I have all the comforts of home. Dave place is thirty minutes out of town, he will retire in a few years and is looking forward to not having to drive an hour each day to and from work. They have really cool neighbors that look out for each other, they warn each other about expected company driving down the road, I am a bit envious....I probably mentioned that.

Have seen a few Black Bruins in the wild.
Like a while back in Yellowstone one broke the mirror on my Pickup.
But I haven’t seen one that big!
