Hi folks,

I stumbled into a couple more 4-inch CS1 guns this summer, and they were both a bit different than most I’ve come across.

This example, stamped in both the yoke area and on the butt. Notice anything?

That’s right. The serial numbers don’t match.

I had the FFL make the appropriate correction on the form, as they had used the yoke number initially.

Then, this one with an ANE prefix arrived. I was puzzled by the stampings here for a different reason.

No serial number, no problem. NO M STAMP ?

I have M-stamped, 1M-stamped, and 2M-stamped CS1 guns….never seen one without the M stamp.

These CS1 guns, with their history, are some of the most likely guns to see a S&W armorer, yet this one escaped detection….

Thanks for looking.

My guess on the second one is it was sold in the commercial market as an "overrun", and the owner never sent it back for the M modifications.

Agreed

I had a 3" CS-1 without the "M" stamp. Still had the original box, and it lettered to being shipped to some distributor. Prefix was "AYD" (going off memory)

I’d put money on this.

The timing seems so close with the (alleged 1988) release of the CS1s and the 1987 bushing recall program.

This seems to lend credence to the earlier production date range.

At one time I owned two 4" CS1's. Neither had the M. I have owned several 686's. None had the M and I was not about to send them back to the mothership.
