A handgunner decides to buy a rifle

I bought one probably 10 years ago and haven't used it a whole lot because of problems with the rotary magazines.I bought extras and they didn't function either. The banana magazines work ok.The front sight decided to fly away shortly after I bought it.I have a Remington bolt action ?512? which is about 70 years old which is several times more accurate and a Browning semi auto that is flawless.Maybe I got a lemon..many folks like them.

It is kinda strange. The rotary mags have always seemed to have
a fairly good rep as far as function. I have eight of them that I
clip back to back to make 4 flippable 20 round mags.
Never have had a malfunction with the rotary mags I have.. Ever.
My 10/22 is a mutt.. 2000 stainless carbine with a blued sporter
barrel. I don't really like the barrel on it, and need to have it reworked,
or buy a bull barrel for it. And the barrel I have was NOS when I got it.
I have the Power Custom trigger mods, nylon buffer, etc, etc..
The trigger is fine.. Barrel is squirrely and has a lot of variance cold vs
hot, etc.. It won't even line up with the iron sights. With the scope,
once you get it hot, and the scope set, it shoots OK for as long as you
wish to use it.
Come back the next day, and you have to start all over again.
Dangest thang I ever seen..

To tell the truth, I much preferred the old Marlin 60 I used to have
as far as a stock shooter. It was a tack driver out of the box, and
didn't care if it was hot or cold.

I suspect a new barrel would get my 10/22 acting right.
I like the 10/22 as far as how customizable it is. But I don't know
if I'll ever buy another one. I'd rather try something else I think.
If I ever run across an old Model 60, I think I'm gonna grab it up
just for grins. I really liked the one I used to have.

There are several others that have some pretty good reps.

The .22 is my favorite for plinking, killing paper, etc.
Much bang, little $$$$. :) But even .22 ammo has been
steadily creeping up.

I like .22's and own several.
.22's are a cheeeep way to burn off steam---relax---have fun---take it easy---shoot the bull---kick back--while away an afternoon.
No loads to work up. Not much to fiddle with. Roll some cans or golf balls. Shoot turtles & frogs.
I have to say that the 10-22 can become a fun---not inexpensive--project gun.
Have fun.
Blessings

I have a Winchester 1885 low wall and a Remington Pro Shop bolt action for my .22s. I never could get close to a 10-22. Most people love them however.

For well over 30 years my only rifle was a Winchester model 190, a not real highly regarded tube fed semi but mine has always worked well. With a tube fed semi the key to reliable function is to NOT keep it loaded, because over time those stacked bullets will flatten out at the point and cause problems with jams.

Anyhow I've been looking into getting a more "serious" caliber rifle for about 2 years. Serious in that I didn't want another 22 caliber even if it was labeled as a .223. So, I've been looking at M1's. Used the M1 Garand is around 899.00 in my area and the Springfield M1A's start at about 1500 bucks. Problem with the Garand is I don't know what to look for in a used one and most of the dealers won't allow you to do anything more than look down the barrel with the breech open. Fearing I'd get stuck with a pig I just kept putting off buying anything.

Then I got a Ruger SR1911 and liked it enough to purchase a second. That led me to looking into what Ruger had in the way of rifles. Once I saw Hickok45's review of the Ruger Gunsite I knew that was the rifle for me. Got it end of November and I've already sent over 100 rounds downrange at a local indoor 50 yard range. Since I am getting older my eyesight is a bit challenged so my X mas present to myself this year was a Nikon Force 2.5-8x28 EER scope. Got that yesterday and it's now mounted on a set of Weaver See thru mounts. Also picked up two 10 round and one 3 round magazine. Going to head out to the range in about 5 minutes and sight in the new scope and see just how small a group I can shoot at 50 yards.

I really like the look of the 10/22 with the Mannlicher style stock. I would like to have one in stainless, but they are fairly expensive and hard to find. I know that the Ruger 10/22 is probably the most modified gun in the world, but I prefer wood stocks.

I like my old winchester .22 too. The first is my dads old .22lr model 61 with a octogon barrel. The next is a 1890 originaly in .22 wrf. I had it rechambered to .22 WMRF since it was restocked to a pistol grip and cheek piece before I got it. The last one is a 63 .22 lr. It is right at the end of production in 1957. Somehow I bought it brand new in the box with hanging tags in the 1970s. Dad was 6ft 5"s and added the wood on the 61 for extra lop.
