A letter to my local Dahl's Foods

Excellent logic! So we never have to worry about an armed robbery at that location because they ban guns in the building.

You won't believe how many people on the local newspaper's website are adamant that allowing people to carry weapons in the store is going to lead to massive wild west style shootouts in the aisles. The truly believe that CCW carriers are going to have accidental discharges while walking along pushing their carts, are going to get into a tiny dispute and pull out their gun and start shooting, or, they reason, if a robbery or similiar does take place, the CCW holder will shoot a bunch of innocent people down trying to "be a hero".

They really believe this stuff. It's hard to imagine. Their view of the lawful gun owner is what they see on TV and in the movies and what they were taught in school. They really think we are like that. They are actually worried that guns "just go off" all the time. They seriously think we start shooting at the slightest provacation.

Worst of all, they refuse to admit into evidence the fact that none of this has happened in the other 38 states with shall-issue laws. A bunch of them have said that those states were not Iowa. Yes, because Iowa is so clearly different???

Bottom line; these people have been so indoctrinated into the narrative of the gun grabber, they can't bring themselves to even consider they might be wrong.

The more and more I watch and read the news, and follow current events, I think that you just put your finger on the root of so many of the problems in our country today. People, on either side of any given issue, are so indoctrinated with a particular point of view, that they refuse to even listen to anything--facts or otherwise--which suggests they may be wrong. They'd rather fight over it, verbally or physically, than stop and work through the logic.

Even if I disagree with someone, I'll do my best to reason through their logic. If the logic behind my position can't stand up to the reasoning behind theirs, then maybe I need to change my mind.

We have had this fight ongoing up our way for a time with our local shopping mall. Pyramid Mall Corp put up signs in our mall that prohibits firearms, but then added a Dicks Sporting Goods and the old Montgomery Wards there sold .22's back when they were in business. There was some local feedback, and there is only one sign, inside the security office. You have to walk in the office to see it, so regular mall goers never see it unless they walk into that office.

A lot of those people have never been asked to go shooting with somebody who knows guns. I have found that most people are surprised when you ask them to go shooting with you, and after they do, the metamorphosis begins. There are many people who would decline your offer, of course, but I remain convinced that the vast majority of people who are sure CCW's are wild west wannabe's can have their minds changed by simple and pleasant experience.

I have an Indian (dot, not feather) coworker who has lived here for fewer than 10 years. I sit right next to him the "consultant bullpen". We were discussing guns, and I asked him if he wanted to go shooting with me. The look on face told of conflicting emotions: excitement, fear, and that look that says "What will my friends think of me?" After a few seconds, he said he would like to go shooting, and so we shall. Once he is instructed on how to handle and shoot the gun, he will realize that all the blather about guns is just that: blather.

I have had a very similar experience with a close friend of mine who I have known for 30 yrs. I do not let just anyone know that I carry, so when I told him that I (now) CCW'd, the quizzical look of surprise, disappointment (?) and disagreement immediately flashed across his face. He then asked me, "Dude, why?". I told him, "Because I can. Do you want to go to the range with me sometime?" He hesitated, but then said "maybe". Well, when we finally did get to the range, his entire attitude changed. I told him that any time he would like to do this again, he could buy the ammo/range time. I'm still waiting...but he no longer gives me "the look".
