A movie recommendation.....

If you're looking for a good movie to fill some time, I'd forgotten how good "THE COWBOYS", with John Wayne was. It'd been a few years since I last saw it and forgotten what a great film it was. Just a suggestion....

True story. I always hated Bruce Dern. Didn't know exactly why, just didn't like him in anything. Then I saw an interview he gave where he talked about working with Wayne on the film. He said that during their fight scene, Wayne actually beat the hell out of him. Right before shooting the scene where Dern kills Duke, Wayne turned to him and said, "They're gonna hate you for this."
Stop the music record scratch! That's why I always hated Dern! He killed John Wayne! It fit together now. The fact that it felt real enough for me to hate him was testament to his acting, which in this film was excellent. Add in Roscoe Lee Brown's performance as Mr. Nightlinger and some good acting by the kids playing the cowboys and it's a hell of a movie.

Also have hard to define feelings about Bruce Dean.
Roscoe Brown was great!
And I ain’t never cheated at cards.
Taking the Fifth on that other stuff!
Was just looking at some old Cowboy pics on Facebook.
One Cowboy looked a lot like Sam Shepard.
Last movie I saw him in was Mud.
McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and others.
Need to see it again!

Dern's "Silent Running" is one of my favorite works by him.

Also if you've seen one JW movie you've seen them all.

I never cared for John Wayne's acting, or over-acting. As said above, you've seen one, you've seen them all. All that stupid "Texican, etc." really got old pretty fast. A little too much over drawl. And he always took those weird short steps. But, he was always the hero except when he wasn't. I guess I'm too young to appreciate his "acting."

The Quiet Man is the movie for which he should have won the Oscar. Much better acting than in his westerns.

Giving the option of watching a JW movie or the Sound of Music...I'd pick Sound of Music. I've never seen it, but it has to be bad!

What sets "The Quiet Man" apart from all other JW movies is the brilliantly cast ensemble that surrounded him.

They all deserved equal billing.

Bruce Dern plays a good crazy, criminal type, like in the movie "Posse" with Kirk Douglas.

I watched "The Undefeated" yesterday. I can't recall ever seeing it before, which is hard to believe. But my favorite JW movie has always been "Big Jake".

This might be a change of pace for you then. The other actors shine in this movie as much as JW, especially the kids.

I thought Dern was excellent in Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as the totally out of it owner of the ranch where the hippies hung out.

Love that movie.

I love most all of Duke's films. So many good ones.
