Every now and then a case will come along that bothers those working it. I have such a case. The victims are known. The perps are known and have gone to court where they entered guilty pleas. Yet the crime does not make sense. I need, for my own peace of mind, to know why.

Three juveniles, 2 at 15 yrs of age and 1 at 16 yrs of age, broke down a solid core door in a metal frame to enter a home. They brought sledge hammers, pry bars and other tools that would allow them to make entry. The residents were not at home. Entry was made by destroying the $400 door.

Once inside, they saw a homemade cake on a table. The cake was cut and each ate two pieces. They then left the residence. There were guns in a glass front cabinet that were not taken. There was a lap top computer within three feet of the cake and not taken. The home owners are straight laced people and good moral citizens. They went all through the home and did not find anything else missing. No medicines were taken, no money, jewelry, firearms, electronics or such items were taken. Just a total of six slices of cake were eaten.

The cake was not visible from any outside window. They could not have known it was there. The kids admitted in court they broke in to steal items but did not do so after eating the cake. They were found by fingerprints. All have prior convictions.

They said in court the cake was the best they ever had. The homeowners said the cake is pretty **** good.

This is nagging at me, the Judge and the DA. Are we missing something? It does not make sense to come prepared to rob a home, destroy a commercial door and only eat cake that was not known to exist before entry.

Oh, I thought this was about Wives :)

Kids, delinquents whatever, who has ever been able to figure them out??

Some idiots around here just broke into a small little Church (basically a house) just vandalized it and stole some kids musical instruments. More damage and expense just breaking down the door and vandalized the inside then what was stolen.

Someone, stolen the bronze name plates off of burial sites of US Veterans for the metal.:(

Quite often we get stuck in "tunnel vision mode"

A fact, if the youths were smart or reasonable, they wouldn't be sitting in the clink now.

It is not always possible to rationalize an irrational act. Many operate on emotion rather than reason.

First emotion, 'envy' they got, I want. Second emotion, 'remorse' wish we hadn't done that.

Prolly just that simple & likely the kids really don't understand the "why". Guilt may be a new experience for them!

The kids are not sitting in jail although they have been handled at least three times each prior to this event. It was the decision of the Judge to have them repay damages, do 200 hrs of community sevice and 24 month probation.

It looks to me like they were breaking and entering more for the thrill than the merchandise. I'd almost bet they weren't druggies. Nothing scared them off?

Maybe their real problem is hypoglycemic psychosis......:)

That really is strange just eating cake and not bothering or taking anything else. They sure went to a lot of trouble to break in. I hope the judgement is right and they actually learn something. Probably not.

You put three idiot teenagers together and not much surprise`s me. It`s a peer thing. I remember once about 50 years ago I was a foreman on a hard dirty job and was hireing teens all the time. This time I overheard one of the guys talking to his buddys. All had just graduated from high school. "Jigs" was telling "Moose" and "Glutton" how he had somehow come across the combo to a safe where he had another job which I think a uncle owned. The three were discussing how they would pull the job off. I am positive moose and glutton were just day dreaming and haveing fun adviseing jigs how they would pull it off. Right after that my job took me to the opposite side of the state I was working, about 300 miles away. I took glutton with me as he was a good worker and we got along. A few days later glutton got a letter from his mother that such and such place got hit and somehow they got in the safe and about $3,000s was stolen!
Right away we both knew who done it. I think the next day I was working on a power pole and a deputy pulled over to ask me a direction or address and then chewed the fat. I thought I would have a little fun with glutton. I could see him looking like a wary deer about two power poles down the line. I pointed at him as he was watching and told the deputy, you go see that guy. I know he can probley help ya!
Anyway about two days later his mom wrote another letter to glutton that the money was found on the doorstep of the business. Maybe two days after that glutton got another letter that jigs turned himself in. I guess he knew the jig was up! Never did hear how much time he got, if any. Kids do dumb stuff!

This generation is so distracted and numb in the mind that I bet you could have stopped the burglary by shining the dot from a laser pointer on the ground and having them chase it until they fell asleep.

I keep thinking that something else was taken and neither they nor the homeowners want to talk about it.

Yet the homeowners are super straight and anything else would be out of character for them. And if there was something else taken, why not let it be known? If there was something illegal taken, then why report the crime in the first place? The homeowner was out the cost of repairs since his insurance deductible is $1000.

Something is not right but I cannot figure what. The DA is calling me almost daily because he is thinking along the same lines as I. There is nothing that can be done about it at this date other than clear my mind.

Those were my thoughts exactly after reading your initial post.

Any chance of getting that cake recipe??

Is it possible these folks are drug sellers/users? Maybe the kids were clients? They may have known where the weed was, got high, then hungry, and left. It's a theory...

I'll bet before breaking down the door, one of the teens said "This is going to be a piece of cake".

I guess he might have been wrong, two pieces of cake actually.

About 4 years or so we had a guy go up and down the local rail line cutting the copper leads for the gate arms. The problem is that it sent a trouble alarm down the entire line and closed all the gate arms, all for maybe $300 in copper. He should have known causing all that trouble the cops would be watching the scrapyard, especially since there is only one around for 30 miles. The nest day this idiot drove in with a truck load of those copper leads. Case closed.
There was a guy about 6 years back where a guy stole a large inflatable Spongebob Squarepants from the roof of a Burger King, just because he could do it. How did the investigator snag him, he went to his apartment because he had a tip. In the guys living room was a Ronald McDonald statue that had been taken from a McD's a month prior. Some cases defy explanation.

Next time they had better hope there is a file in the cake.

Did you examine the rest of the cake to see if something was in it?

Joe has come the closest so far I think, but A10 is there too.

Look for signs of ritualistic "marking" (perhaps excretions or secretions) of the scene (particularly the bedrooms) that would not be obvious to someone else outside the click or of a nature that would embarrass the victims and point to something they would prefer to keep secret.

Does the victim family include a daughter in her early teenage years? Is the wife edgy or flirty?

I would carefully gauge the victims posture and demeanor. Clearly you don't have the whole story.
