In a recent thread, I made casual reference to what I thought was a commonly known, touchstone reference to an essay " A Nation of Cowards", that in retrospect, I probably shouldn't have supposed was common knowledge among even well-informed members of this forum. The essay appeared initially in the admittedly obscure publication, Public Interest, the Fall, 1993 edition, written by a Washington, D.C., attorney, Jeffrey R. Snyder. It can easily be found with a Google search, and of equal interest and as easily found, commentary on this essay by the reliably cerebral columnist, George Will. If you have, or have not read this, it's worth re-reading from time to time. The recent flap over the Costas remarks put me in mind of this, and I'm happy to bring this essay back to attention...

As timely now as it was 20 years ago. Unfortunately, we live in a litigious society, populated by aggressive prosecutors and get-rich-quick lawsuit artists, all waiting to tap into the law abiding gun owner ... a society that continues to create a massive divide on the interpretation and practice of 2A, and one all too willing to demonize its gun carrying citizens.

Yeah, but we've come a long way, I think, in that now most states are shall issue, and the Supremes have said that the 2nd does, in fact, mean individuals have a right to keep and bear firearms.

Crime is down, too.
