A Native American Christmas

Here's my contribution to Native American Christmas.

Los Matachines, they are rituals that are a mix of Native customs/traditions, Spanish culture, and the Catholic Church. It's multi-century history that touches subjects that we can't talk about on this forum.

Every pueblo has thier own tradition and Matachines come out for various feast days though out the years.

Anyway, here are a couple of videos I found on youtube. Frankly I'm surprised photography was allowed, as it is almost always forbidden for rituals such as these.

The the ritual fires are called Farolitos and/or Luminarias depending on who you ask.

You'll hear gunfire. They shoot up in the air to scare the evil sprits away. Yes, I know...

You can really see the Spanish Colonial influences.
