A new 5-screw Chiefs Special for Christmas. Are you a fan of "Dragnet"?

Wow! I did not know about the Dragnet guns until your post. You are going to have the only guns known to have gone to the actors.
Very significant pieces of history to my mind. Congratulations.

Also enjoyed meeting you and seeing your chiefs in Glendale.

In late 1980s was at gun auction and they had two documented Jack Webb guns. The S&W was a m36 that had gold badge 714 on plate. It was in a wood presentation case and had documents with it. The other was a Brn HP
also in fitted case, don't remember the extras on it but had the documents too. I should have bought them they didn't go for much more than a new gun at the time. 1980s-1990s were before prices started blowing up on everything. $200 N frames in cases are now just a dream, case will bring that, nowadays.

Thanks David.

I enjoyed meeting you and seeing your display.

I'm eager to read your upcoming article in the Journal. I just finished reading Killers of the Flower Moon. Wow. And you have that agent's .357! Whew!

I'll look forward to sharing the two "Dragnet" Chiefs with everyone in Tulsa in June.

Regards,

As often noted here, Jack Webb was also presented with a model 39 9 mm pistol sometime around 1954. His name and 714 badge number were engraved on the left side of the frame. See the July, 1955 Guns magazine "My Favorite Gun" monthly section.

And then, the grips on Ben Alexander's Chief Special are by Joe Blackford, who was also an LAPD match shooter. Also discussed here previously.
The slope at the recoil shoulder and the pointy finger grooves are ID features.

Tangentially, I remember Ben Alexander's character being armed with a Model 39 in the 60's TV Felony Squad.

Bob,
The main character in Killers is Tom White. He was the agent in charge for the Osage Murders case. The gun I have belonged to Doc White, Tom's younger brother. Doc is mentioned in the book a few places, but did not take part in the investigation.

Your pair of Dragnet guns would be a great display in Tulsa. There is a Single Gun or Related Pair category. I'm sure you would be able to fill a table with the guns plus all the provenance you will have gathered by then.

That badge is outstanding. Thanks for sharing it with us.

The widow of the second owner of Jack Webb's Chiefs Special s/n 38185 still had his original badge # 714. Instead of selling it at auction along with the revolver, the lady donated it to the Webb museum at the L.A. Police academy.

c'est la vie
