Went to a small gun show about 60 miles out of Atlanta today ,
I find interesting stuff at smaller shows lately , wasn't looking for
a new handgun but a dealer from the deep southern part of Georgia was their , he told me that it's his first time at this show and wasn't impressed with the promoter or the turnout .
He said he'll make me a good deal on any of the Smith's he had so he make back the table fee's.
I saw s 638 he had along with 442,642 636 , I've all of them except the 638 and I've always liked the way they looked .
So I made a offer of 300.00 , he paused a moment and said okay .
So I'm sure it's a good deal for me and he said that covers table fees . I'm sure it was old stock fr him ,
It's a 638-3 ,DJV6127 if anyone who has the book could give me a date on it l'd be grateful , thanks

I'd say that any new (NOS?) Smith Revolver for $300 is a great deal. I did a search and saw a picture. Seems like the hammer serrations are just barely visible - - is that the one you got? Very cool, but I think "de-cocking" would make me nervous since you can't really roll your finger over the top of hammer to secure it. Might be easy to cock it, but then your only option is to squeeze the trigger! Am I missing something?
Did you see any 648's at the show?

You are correct on the hammer serrations , will keep the decocking to a minimum , 648's none

My Fourth Edition of the Catalog doesn't list a DJV prefix. All the DXX numbers seem to fall in the 2005 to 2008 range. Someone with their own database may be able to give you a better date. I have the earlier Model 38, and seldom cock the hammer because of the decocking issues. Can be done, but it makes me nervous even at the range.

I agree with Pistolero, any S&W, regardless of frame size for $300 is a great deal. Nice humpback! congrats neighbor.

I got one of the DAO M64s that were on special last month at Southern Ohio Gun. Mine turned out to be a -5. The price, with hand-pick and shipping, was $254.

Oops, wrong thread. Sorry, everyone.

I bought mine last summer. My LGS ordered it (don't know if it came from S&W directly, or if he got it from another dealer). It's a 638-3, serial nbr: DEAxxxx.

I paid $398 which was better than other places here in NJ.
You got a good deal! Congratulations.

I picked up a used CXC series M638 yesterday at my LGS (haven't had time to photograph it yet) for $271.00 OTD. Asking price was $279.00 plus the states cut. I always ask for the "bottom line" price and they do they're best. I asked about why such a low price and staff was non-committal, just a smile?? They told me the new M638's are going for $600.00 plus. You got a great deal :)

I don't know the book date,but this is my s&w 638-3
