Think that Gerber has a website where you can look up serial numbers. From what I have heard the vietnam era knives which had been made around that time may be worth more. Frank

Absolutely they are of higher price when found. There are rare models among the Vietnam era Gerbers. The canted blade models demand very high prices as well as the yellow handled models.

I couldn't afford a Mark II back then, had to get the little brother... all my paper route could swing back then...

My opinion: the Mark I is a fine knife and in fact, is perfect for people like me who are on the small side (I'm 5 foot 7 1/2"). Wish I had one.

Indeed, many military knives are, in my opinion, too big, e.g., the WWII Kabar combat knife. A great knife if you're 6 foot 2, but not so much if you're much smaller.

I have a Gerber Mark II (or, III?). Made circa 2016, Black blade maybe 6" long, nylon sheath, serrated teeth mid-blade.

I've owned many, many Mk. IIs over the years. As much as I liked them, others wanted them more so I sold them. I did manage to hang onto 2 or 3. On the last one I bought the blade was loose and with a little wiggling the blade separated from the handle.

I did not know until then that the tang was less than an inch long and the blade was epoxied into the handle! I always thought that the tang was much longer and the handle was cast directly onto the tang--NOPE--when I sent the knife back to Gerber for repair they glued the blade into a new handle and refinished the blade (at no cost to me).

My days of carrying a boot knife or dagger are long past but knowing what I now know about the Mk II I would never recommend it for serious work.

I really wanted one when they came out but it wasn’t high enough on my priority list to actually buy.

Very nice knife!

Had a Mark I(?) back in the 80s, cool if you had to "stick people" but wasn't a practical utility/woods knife; found that a smaller 5" "Deck knife'' was much more practical.

Got a couple of the 5" Mini-Kbars when they were introduced about 20 years ago!"

I got this one back in the early 80's. Original leather scabbard is MIA and the knife, although not in pristine condition, is still in pretty good condition.
I used to have the Greber Guardian boot knife with camo handle and camo scabbard, but that, too, is MIA. Pitty.....

I’m over in the Philippines attending jungle survival school.
And it’s time to go up into the jungle.
We are divided into small groups about 10 guys, and paired up.
I didn’t know the guy i was paired with but we had a 20 mile truck ride out to the helicopters to get acquainted.
On the way out, he showed me his new knife.
His girlfriend had given him one of the bent hilt Gerber.
After we got up to the top of the mountains, we spread out and starting setting up camp.
We built some Pancho shelters. But he kept coming over to borrow a knife.
I was carrying a Buck 110, Buck 119 and SAK.
So I finally asked him what’s the problem with your Knife?
He Sheepishly admitted it was not very good for cutting.

Everyone has their own opinion on knives. It can be argued that the USMC KA-BAR is one the best overall combat/general purpose knives going. I am 5'10" and have had a KA-BAR since I was first issued on over 50 years ago.

in Ranger School, 1969, another student had a KaBar, and stabbed it into a tree for some reason, and the blade snapped of at the guard. I suspect that rusty blade is still in that tree in the Everglades. Me, a Buck General in a custom sheath, and a much more handy 110 folder. I still have both.

My General. I the CPT, with a Major out in a village at lunch time. I didn't like working as his subordinate, I was too used to doing what I wanted how I wanted to have a new "boss." SF VET

My Alaskan Gerber Mk 1

gerber.jpg

1985 found me a new student at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks.

The ROTC/Military Science Department had a weekend trip to the Black Rapids Northern Warfare Training Center near Ft. Greely on the schedule and we were all required to have a sheath knife with us.

I went over to Frontier Sporting Goods on Second Avenue in Fairbanks and bought this Gerber MkI #D 0557S.

Had it ever since.

And yea, it’s great for punching holes in things, but for slashing/cutting, not so much. I too had a larger Buck straight knife.

Now, I mainly carry Randalls, specifically full tang Randalls although my Randall boot knife is not full tang.

I'm communicating with Randall Knives and one of their dealers now about a little something like a "BBQ Knife" to celebrate getting my BA.

Best,
RM Vivas
