I came across a pair of N frame target diamond grips that were NOT "coke" bottle. What vintage gun and caliber were these grips originally on? The man who has them for sale said they came off an early model 29. The only diamond N frame target grips I am familiar that came on early 44 mags were cokes. The grips in question have the more modern style checking that does not come below the back strap yet with the old style diamond. Another way of explaining them is they look just like K frame diamond targets except they are N's.

Thanks,

Ron

Welcome to the forum!

If they were made from walnut, they could be from as far back as the late 50's. Even a bit earlier if they have no relief on the left side for spent cases to clear the cylinder upon ejection.

29's came with "cokes" from the beginning right up until about late '66 or '67. The standard diamond targets and magnas were phased out by '68.

If the ones you are looking at are made from Goncalo Alves, then they are from the '60's.

Ron, the non-coke diamond targets you have were made approx same time that cokes were made and used (1956-1967).
They would have been used on other models other than the 44 magnum and the start of model 57 (in 1964 which also used cokes)

Here's a picture showing the three types you spoke of

Gun 4 Fun and VM, thank you for your answers and the pictures VM sent. I did not know that cokes came on model 57's but I did know they came on pre model 24 44 specials because I have one. The grips I was looking at were made of walnut and had the oval relief cut in the left grip panel. I was pretty sure the guy was full of beans thinking they came off a 44 mag.
