I read the book many years ago and remembering it I decided to find a copy and re-read it. I am now almost finished with it and would like to recommend it to any of you Gents who might like Nautical stories.
The book is:
Voyage a novel of 1896 by
Sterling Hayden
The author was a Hollywood actor in the 1940`s and 50`s and was quite well known.
The story is that of a steel sailing ship`s voyage from NY to San-Fransicso CA at the turn of the last century, with a cargo of coal and the many trials and tribulations they encounter.
The characters are very well developed and I believe it would have made a great movie-too bad it was never done!
Un-fortunatly Hayden died at the age of 70 and only wrote two or three books.
There are a few chapters about politics and social issues that drag a bit, but the Seagoing parts more than make up for any short-comings .
And that concludes my book report.
