A Short Review: Once Upon a Time ... in Hollywood

I don’t recall ever having watched the film trailers and other advertisements for a movie and having no earthly idea what is going on!? I hope it does well from word of mouth because I am not sure the marketing is going to help.

As long as they didn't call it "The feel good movie of the year!", it should be fine.

Tarantino seems to take what could have otherwise been a good story then ruin it in the form a movie. Two examples I can think of offhand are "Pulp Fiction" and a fairly recent western; don't recall the title, but Tarantino fans will know. Like "Pulp Fiction", I attempted to watch it until I discovered it was a waste of time.

We all have different tastes in films. Certainly worthy of comment but not argument.

For what it’s worth, while I loved Pulp Fiction, and have watched it several times, I did not like what I saw of the Kill Bill movies, Django, or The Hateful Eight. (I don’t watch all of movies I don’t like.) Don’t recall if I saw Jackie Brown, but maybe not. I should check it out.

So I don’t consider myself a Tarantino fan, per se.

I find, at least in recent years, for both books and movies, to me the characters and atmosphere are more important than the plot. I’m not sure there even is a plot in “Once Upon a Time..” But, there is plenty of atmosphere, character, and.... action, too. (And humor, big time. It is very funny in places.)

One review I read described it as a western.

I think many — not all, of course — of those here who think they don’t like Tarantino will like this particular movie.

The Hateful Eight . . .

Two words:

Reservoir Dogs

Is it possible to hear "Stuck in the Middle with You" and NOT picture that scene?

That, along with PF and Inglorious Basterds, are my favorites of QT. Some, like Django and the Kill Bill movies, I didn't care for at all.

True Romance was a movie he wrote but didn't direct. It's a great movie, also.

I hear ya, Ivan! Yesterday, while my wife and I sat through several previews of these “feel good” type movies, waiting for the feature to start, I leaned over and whispered in her ear, “Nice to know in advance what movies I don’t want to see...”

(Wasted all my buttered popcorn on the previews, too, dagnabit!)

Can't wait to see it. Killer cast, including the late Luke Perry. Be interesting to see Damian Lewis (Band of Brothers) as Steve McQueen. Should also be interesting to see how Tarantino ties things in to the Spahn Ranch and the whole Charles Manson thing. And Dakota Fanning? Can't remember seeing her since The Secret Life of Bees.

I can almost guarantee one thing...it won't be a boring film.

About ten minutes of Django was enough to tell it was a loser. I didn't know Jackie Brown was a Tarantino film. Not an excellent picture by any means, but pretty good and worth watching once. Had he put his usual effort into that one, it could easily have been a dud.

When I watched Band of Brothers, I thought Damian Lewis was channeling Steve McQueen.
