Having owned this great shooting Distinguished Combat Magnum, otherwise known as the model 586 for several years now, I decided it needed an equally impressive resting place.

The following photos show the results of a couple of months of design and construction for a new presentation case.

I elected to build the case from red oak because I like the grain and availability of 1/2" thick boards from Loews. I also wanted to do something interesting on the lid so I inlaid a 20 gauge stainless steel Smith & Wesson logo flush with the top and slowly over a several day period, filled the cutouts with black lacquer. The case was finished with Early American Minwax stain and many coats of clear and toning lacquer before being rubbed down with steel wool and paste wax. Keeping with the S&W color scheme, I lined the interior with Royal Blue Velvet.
The dual HKS speedloaders are loaded with Federal Premium 158 grain Hydra-Shok JHP ammo.

Check out the photos below. Bob

You did a great job in making a beautiful display case for your 586. A semi rare pistol like that deserves to be displayed. I need a nickle 586 to go along with my 581. Thanks for sharing.

Work of Art

That is truly a work of Art. Absolutely beautiful !!!

The gun is a beauty too.

Sweetness!

That is a really nice set! Give yourslf a Big "ATTA BOY" for your craftsmanship! Bet these pics are your 'puter's screen background/saver:D

Thanks guys, always nice to have your work appreciated.

James, the case was built with a radial arm saw, a belt sander and a router. The router in conjunction with a template was used to inlet the logo into the lid.
The form for the gun and speed loaders was made with a combination of packing foam (not Styrofoam) which is soft and flexible but not so much as foam rubber, glued to a piece of artists foam core board. Bob

Very nice work sir, on the case and the revolver. They are both beautiful. The 586 was the first revolver my department issued me back in the 80's, replacing my personally owned model 66. It's an excellent weapon. Again, great work.

Bob, how much would you charge for a copy of the logo sans the black laquer paint? I would love to dress up one of my cases like that. I think that I see a side business here.

Reminds me of the stuff I see the guys from Orange County Choppers do on American Chopper. They have a flo jet machine that can cut out anything from metal. Wouldn't I like to have that to play with for a week or so.:D

Placing my order

I'd like to order my display case. Please PM the price and I will send delivery information. I believe you have found a second career. Even unfinished that box would be stunning! Impressive craftsmanship.

Seriously, if you do decide to go the route of trying to sell anything like that with maybe a few custom options…

It just might sell!

I know I would want one if you ever do. BZ though on the amazing work and effort.
