Having owned this great shooting Distinguished Combat Magnum, otherwise known as the model 586 for several years now, I decided it needed an equally impressive resting place.
The following photos show the results of a couple of months of design and construction for a new presentation case.
I elected to build the case from red oak because I like the grain and availability of 1/2" thick boards from Loews. I also wanted to do something interesting on the lid so I inlaid a 20 gauge stainless steel Smith & Wesson logo flush with the top and slowly over a several day period, filled the cutouts with black lacquer. The case was finished with Early American Minwax stain and many coats of clear and toning lacquer before being rubbed down with steel wool and paste wax. Keeping with the S&W color scheme, I lined the interior with Royal Blue Velvet.
The dual HKS speedloaders are loaded with Federal Premium 158 grain Hydra-Shok JHP ammo.
