I was in my doctor's office back in February and was told my blood pressure was pre-hypertension and to come back and get a physical.
Had heard about the supposed benefits of taking 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar daily and have been doing this for about 3 months.
Physical was last Thursday and the doc told me in addition to my blood pressure now being normal, I had also lost 9 pounds! He claims the vinegar had nothing to do with all this and that taking it is a waste of my time and money. Really?
I'm continuing to take this vinegar despite him poo-pooing it.
Do any of you have any related stories to back or dispute mine?

Started drinking that nasty stuff spring 09
autumn 09 i had lost 30pounds.
It works by contrackting the stomach so you eat less. :D

I have heard about the vinegar thing. I am not sure exactly what it is supposed to cure, I always thought it was for heartburn/too much stomach acid. The theory was that your stomach manufactures acid when it thinks it doesn't have enough. The acid from the vinegar supposedly supplements the lack of and so you don't make any more. There are certain types of apples that will do the same thing.
The one thing I have always heard about the vinegar is that it has to be non pasteurized stuff. If it is pasteurized there is no other benefits besides the taste of vinegar and the fact that it wont possibly make you sick form some unwanted bacteria. White vinegar wont be of any benefit and neither will most brown either.
The only brand I know of that is unpasteurized is "Bragg's."
They advertise that it has the "mother" in it. Apparently the pasteurizing process kills the stuff that really benefits you. I know you cant take pasteurized vinegar and add it to apple juice to "kick it off" and make more...like I said, the active ingredients are dead. But Bragg's and others not pasteurized will because the active ingredients are still active.
Perhaps the doc said what he did because the brand you are taking is pasteurized????? Like everything else...it probably works better for some than for others.

The doc talked like the notion of taking vinegar of any kind was bogus.
I will check into what you said about the "mother" in the vinegar as I have heard something on this. Thanks.

You can also use it to remove the calcium water spots left on stainless steel faucets and the like. Or, put it in a spray bottle and spray mold to kill it.

My wife even uses it in the salad!

I'm a believer. I buy Bragg's unpasturized apple cider vinegar in the organic food section of my local Kroger store, usually about $7 a quart but occasionally on sale for $5. I've been using it for amost a year and drink about an oz a day. I keep it in the fridge and take a big ol swig right out of the bottle every morning and chase it with cold water being careful to rinse good. I also use it to cook with and it makes a super salad dressing; 1 part ACV to 3 parts olive oil w/salt & pepper to suit.

Heartburn is a thing of the past for me and I think it helps keep my blood glucose in line. If I'm having a sugar crave, a small shot of BACV stops it cold. Also keeps the plumbing in regular working order. My hair doesn't fall out as fast and seems like it grows faster. Try it, whaddaya got to lose? :)

From the Braggs ACV website:
Apple Cider Vinegar has been highly regarded throughout history. In 400 B.C. the great Hippocrates, Father of Medicine, used it for its amazing health qualities.

I've liked the taste of apple cider vinegar since I was a kid. In the summer, I slice up some fresh garden cucumbers, place them in a shallow bowl and pour apple cider vinegar over them. A little ground pepper, and let them marinate, and eat it up; yum...

I'll have to try the shot a day, and see how it helps my heartburn, weight, and follicle deficiency!

I think a lot of doctors like to think such remedies are bogus; gives them the opportunity to prescribe something for you that kills whatever budget you may have for something else.

There are benefits with such remedies but generally natural remedies are things that work in the long run, consumed over a long period of time, often years. It's effects have to build up in your system. Where as pills work immediately

Apple cider vinegar is thought to trigger certain enzymes that aid in digestion along with aiding in probiotics it helps loose weight. It helps with diabetes by controlling glucose but it can also make diabetes worse depending on your type and how far it is.

Loves me some apple cider vinegar! I put it in my home made salsa as a preservative, I make a cole slaw variation with it, I pickle jalapenos & mixed vegetables in it...the list goes on & on. this is the first I've heard about it's health benefits, though.

I took antacids every day until I started doing vinegar. I was told it has to still have the "Mother" in it to do any good.

That said I wouldn't waste my time trying to convince the Doctor

My mother always took vinegar to 'keep the skeeters away' while she was outside working in the vegetable garden & flower garden. Never worked for me, though.

Good for soaking cucumbers and Vidalia onions in.

Vinegar may have some effect on some hypertension. Apparently the acetic acid in vinegar is similar to aspirin in some ways. Hypertension has different causes so if you have a tumor on the adrenal glands, don't expect much from vinegar. The stroke will severely injure or kill you. Don't mess with blood pressure. I've been through a number of good doctors before finding an excellent doctor. Vinegar wouldn't touch the tumor on my pituitary gland. I don't think the quantity of vinegar used would help preserve your corpse.

Your life, your choice. And it can be your life.

As a result, it was observed that acetic acid itself, the main component of vinegar, significantly reduced both blood pressure (p<0.05) and renin activity (p<0.01) compared to controls given no acetic acid or vinegar, as well as vinegar.

Vinegar and garlic, while healthy foods, do not help control your blood pressure.

Don't drink it straight. It’s so acidic that it could harm your tooth enamel and your esophagus.

Don't use a lot. “Dilute 1 to 2 tablespoons in a big glass of water, and sip it along with your meals one or two times a day,” Johnston says.

it could be coincidence too, I mean you did lose 9 pounds & its no secret that losing a few pounds can reduce your BP. me on the other hand was at a plump 210lbs and I did a 180 in my diet & daily excercise and now I'm at 165lbs. My BP dropped down from mid 160's/90's to mid 130's/80's however I'd like to see it drop down a bit more w/o taking meds. for the past 4 months I've been popping a couple garlic tablets a day. 1250mg each of these garlic pills however I havent checked my BP yet. Not sure if they really help or not but everywhere i look online says they do, along with the apple cider vinagar. I tried taking that foul brew in the past and just couldnt do it. :p

I like the taste. Any health benefits are just a bonus. I probably have six or seven types of vinegar in little bottles in the kitchen. A lot of foods you buy, like dill pickles, salad dressings, and ketchup contain vinegar. I'll "super charge" them all by adding extra vinegar. Nothing better than ripe garden tomatoes & fresh cucumbers, a little olive oil, some vinegar, salt, Italian seasoning. I'd go broke if I hadda' use store bought salad dressing. Eat it everyday and never get tired of it.:D Then Summer ends.:(
