**A very rare S&W** 1999 Model 681-3 7-Shot - Only 25 made

You have a way of finding this kinda stuff. That's a really cool gun. I'm sure you would find more info on it also. Nice catch, Larry

Thanks Larry, some interesting stuff out there for sure!!

I am trying to work out a deal with the seller to purchase all of these 681's including the two that are consecutive serial numbered.

Will certainly offer them up to our members first if I can get my hands on them.

I asked Roy to define the meaning of NON-STD as is found on the label fo these 681's and here is his reply:

"The remark non-standard indicates that it is not a cataloged item and was a specially assembled revolver. Roy"

The way I read the letter on Fugate's site says there was a run of 160 of the revolvers with the one's for sale being part of a shipment of 25.

Look in the third line of the first paragraph.

That is INCORRECT......if you read it again you will see that Roy mentions a group of 160 that were produced in 2002 with UN-FLUTED cylinders for the RSR Wholesale Group......these 25 guns were NOT part of that order and these have fluted cylinders and were produced in 1999, before the 160 guns mentioned above.

Here's a 3" 681 performance center 7 shot with Birdsong finish. Only picture I have. I still have this one but I had a lnib model that I sold for huge money to Fugate Bros about 10 years ago. ;)

I owned one of these...in fact, I owned the sold on GB recently by Keystone.
Here is another post...I like the comment by colt_saa, I know he is connected in the S&W world & and tends to stick to the facts

Info Please on a ?Rare? Mod 681

The one sold in May by Keystone does not show the box label in his photos.....and the gun has smooth target style stocks which would be incorrect for this particular batch of 25 that we are discussing.

And another observation is that it appears on the 25 guns in we are discussing, the serial number is NOT etched inside the crane (see my photos above).......where if you look at the gun sold by Keystone, theirs DOES have the S/N stamped inside the crane.

Excuse this drift but, for those interested in a shooter L frame 357 7 shot, the 620 is a wonderful shooting revolver, at least the two I've owned and shot were. I still have one but I passed the other on to a friend who has won numerous competitions using the 620. I've never seen a 619 in person but S&W made them. A fixed sight version 7 shot L frame. 620 always reminded me of a mountain gun.

I actually saw a 681 7-shot at a local Cabela's a couple of months ago. I don't know if it had a box or not. As I recall it was in the $500-$700 range.

681-3

Here's your label. As for the stocks, I'd be hard pressed to believe that they're worth an add of $12-1300 ... and if this isn't one of the 25 due to stocks and the s/n in the crane (which tends to inforce a parts gun theory)...than they're is more than 25 of these 681-3 7-rounders out there!

IT IS still a nice piece regardless!

Interesting stuff. I have one of the Camfour 4" ported 681's that only 50 were made and one of the 3" Birdsong Green T Performance center guns. The 7 shot 681's have a weird appeal to them.

Sounds like you have 2 of the 3 factors that determine value. Condition is there, rarity is there, sounds like the market interest is what would be in question now. I would bet it is a pretty narrow market based the responses. As others have said, I would not consider the prices of the listings by the other seller as market value. Good luck with the journey to research and potentially add it to your collection.

I basically agree with your statement. However, if someone lists an item with a price and it does or doesn't sell, then that really helps determine the value of it.
