.357Sig - OK for Europeans but too weird for US
.357Mag. - Too much to shoot well.
9mm - Too little...or maybe too much.
.40S&W - Too expensive not to go with .45!
.44Spl/.44 Mag - There's only one "Dirty Harry"
.45ACP - Too much...or maybe too little.
.45Colt - For cowboys only.
.454/.460 - Don't go there!
.500 - CUT IT OUT!

To delete an oops post, hit the edit, then select "delete" and "continue".
 
For self defense against an assailant, accurately apply projectiles as needed.

Don't become caught up in the relative effectiveness of handgun cartridges or loads.

Personally I'm satisfied that anything from 38 Special/9mm on up will do a reasonable job while realizing that no handgun is to be relied upon as a one shot stopper.
