AAF (Alliance of American Football)

I'm in. Perfect timing as I don't follow the NBA and March Madness is a month away and the Stanley Cup is two months away.

I'm going to follow Memphis due to proximity and for Sheepdawg.

I'm totally with ya! The NBA does absolutely NOTHING for me. March madness is alright. I never watch hockey until the Stanley Cup.

I may have to root for the Arizona Hotshots since a lot of my friends and family are Firefighters. Their logo is cool.

Eight teams; I know there is AZ, San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Birmingham, Orlando, Atlanta, Memphis, and San Diego.

Starts tomorrow. No kickoffs!!

I didn’t get a chance to catch yesterday’s games, but I’ll be checking out the game at 3:00 (Central Time) today. If that tickles my interests at all, I’ll also watch some of the 7:00 game.

Kinda cool actually....watched the game yesterday and went to wiki to find out all the details....like all the salary ideas as well as the ref upstairs on site to call off a call called on the field....no extra point kicks...you have to go for it....all in all...it looks good!

I watched most of the first half of the SA - SD game last night. The SA head coach is Mike Riley; he coached at Nebraska for three years until last year.

I actually found myself liking the no kickoffs and was pleasantly surprised how they did most of the commercials; as an insert while we could still watch what was going on on the field. You also can hear the QB barking out the signals.

I'll catch this afternoon games as well especially Salt Lake as they have four ex Huskers on the roster.

Except for Atlanta and Arizona, all cities without NFL teams.

Smart move not going up directly against the NFL.

This is the first of several leagues meant to compete indirectly with the NFL. Vince McMahon will be resurrecting the XFL next year.

There is also supposed to be a flag football league (as exciting as it sounds, and a player owned league.

It will be interesting to see if any of them succeed.

I see they just said that the AAF beat the NBA in TV watched ratings last night. It surprised some folks....but not football fans.

Lately, the NBA is probably rougher than the NFL. Nowadays, I call the NBA football with shorts.

I watched a game yesterday for about 10 minutes.

Well, this will not be the first attempt at a new league.

AFL, USFL, Arena Football, XFL (it's making a comeback?????) and this.

As much as I would like it to succeed due to the way the NFL is today, I don't see it going very far before it closes up shop.

Like it or not, the NFL monopoly is just too well entrenched for any serious competition to go anywhere past a few seasons. Worst case is the powers-that-be in or allied with the NFL will make sure it doesn't.

Sports is an entertainment business and not really so much of a sport these days. I look at the NFL the same way I look at Hollywood....and often with the same distain.

Interesting AAF fun fact:

How much will AAF players get, and where will they play?

AAF founder Bill Polian, an ESPN analyst, gave ESPN (imagine that!) the details on player salaries for the nascent league. Players will get three-year, non-guaranteed contracts worth $250,000, along with health insurance and an education stipend.

The league will target players who haven’t made the NFL or the Canadian Football League, and will assign players to teams based on their college or pro affiliation. Former SEC players will play in Memphis, Atlanta, or Birmingham, for example.

“Each of our teams will have at least five colleges whose players become theirs, four designated NFL teams and a CFL team that is assigned,” Polian told ESPN.

The idea, obviously, is to goose interest in the AAF by giving fans a chance to watch their favorite college players one more time. Plus, as Polian notes, it’s not like Birmingham will run the table by creating Alabama version 2.0; the best Tide players will be in the NFL.
