Acer computers

The 10" models say the keyboard is 93% the size of a conventional keyboard. My wife has a 10" Samsung netbook and it's a great little computer. I can't type on a full size and I still can't on a 93%er. :D

Bought an Acer Tablet in 2004. Worked well but the keyboard went south in 2007. I replaced it and upgraded the memory. Still working today.
BUT if I had researched the unit on the 'net before I bought it, I never would have bought it. That model had a component problem that really really pissed off a lot of users.
I lucked out and while they have had QA problems in the past, I think they are doing better and would consider buying one today.
YMMV.

I just bought a 18.5" flat panel LCD monitor to replace the fifty pounder that came with my 10 year old Compac PC. A company called Acer made the monitor. For 99.99, I just couldn't go wrong for home use. Question is, they make this neat little white computer that my local electronics retailer sells for 299.99. It's small; I believe it's a Model R1600. Anybody have any experience with these? I just use Internet at home, no gaming or anything. It doesn't come with a CD drive, but these can be added easily. Just wondering about any pros or cons.

I had a great Acer notebook for nearly three years and it was GREAT until it was stolen. The 10' Samsung Netbook that replaced it was the pit's it was too slow and too small for me.:( Late July and early August will bring back to school specials Toshiba or an Acer are on the horizon.;)

That small Acer looks nice but that Intel Atom processor is to slow to run the OS alone and at $300.+ it lacks the portability of a laptop. I'd go with a small desktop with a dual core processor upgraded with at least three gig's of memory. There are several benefits to having a fast computer and you will realize that once you have used a slow one (atom processor).
If your upgrading to a new computer and know how to remove all you info from that old Compaq pass it on to the kids or to someone who needs a computer of course you can always sell it...

Just got the June issue of Consumer Reports.

Netbooks - Acer #1 (27 tested)
Laptop 15-16'' - Acer #6 (24 tested)
PC All In One - Acer #2 (9 tested)
PC Full Size (Acer not rated)

I stand corrected. My references were to the older machines. Guess its just like Hyundai, where the old stuff was one step above a Yugo, and now they are competitive with all the japanese brands and setting their sights on BMW and MB with their Genesis model....

I was surprised too. I never paid Acer any attention until I happened across this thread and just happened to see CR with a cover about rating computers... so I took a look... and there it was -- Acer on top in a lot of categories. I've been using Dell since forever because they are cheap and easy to configure what I want. Though, my wife recently picked up a MacBook Pro and it seems to be way ahead of my Windows stuff. I'm about ready for another office computer. I may switch to Apple.

I have two Acer LCD's setting on my desk right now. No problems! My Acer netbook is a gem. I use it more than my 14" Toshiba Laptop which has been a great machine! I never use off the shelf desktops. There all utter junk compared to what one can built form parts purchased at Newegg or other online retailers.

The Acer R1600 sells for right around $200, don't pay more than that. It would do what 95% of people use a computer for. If I had a need for a low power (and low power using) machine, I'd not have an issue getting one. They seem to be using XP still, which really is a plus to lots of people who don't want to make a big jump to Win7.

May have to do something pretty soon. I bought one of the 18.5" Acer LCD monitors, and I really like it, but it makes everything so HUGE! I've gone in and tried to adjust the resolution, but my computer will not let me move the tab off of 800 by 600 pixels. Again, don't know a whole lot on computers, but it seems to me I've adjusted this feature in the past, and for whatever reason, can't do it now. The monitor itself will not provide for it either, just lets me put it in "aspect ratio", which just squeezes it down on the sides and leaves black screen to the right or the left.

Windows XP.

A few things to try...If it's a Compaq get the model number and go to HP.com get the latest drivers for your machine. OR go to control panel - device manager - display adapters, get the video adapters model then go to the manufactures website and download the latest driver. You'd be surprised how often drivers are updated my ATI card is ~ a year or so old and they make a new driver every three month each one fixing the last. If the above doesn't help PM me and well get you squared away.

I'll try that and thanks!

Well, I downloaded the latest driver yesterday and restarted the computer. I left for the bookstore before it came up; had someone to meet. I got home a couple hours later, and it absolutely refuses to power up. I pulled the side panel, and while I can't see anything, something sure smells burnt. Guess the Acer may win out after all; don't know what else to do since this thing has seemingly turned to toast. Good of an excuse as any to spend a couple hundred bucks, huh? :)

Acer's have great top of the line features at an even better price. I'm on my second Acer laptop and have never had fault with either of them. Except that the first one crashed...to the floor... right after the warranty ran out...:(

It sounds like you're talking about the Acer One. I've heard good things and am considering one for specific purpose. I'm not really sure I'd be happy with a screen that small though.

I have an 18.5" Acer flat monitor. I was actually talking about the R1600 netbook, the little one. One of our body shop guys here uses it to run estimates and stuff. All I need one for is internet and YouTube, and that sort of thing. It's tiny, so that's a plus. Don't do games or anything, so that's not a necessity. I figure for internet surfing and stuff at home, it'll be fine.
