I just bought a 18.5" flat panel LCD monitor to replace the fifty pounder that came with my 10 year old Compac PC. A company called Acer made the monitor. For 99.99, I just couldn't go wrong for home use. Question is, they make this neat little white computer that my local electronics retailer sells for 299.99. It's small; I believe it's a Model R1600. Anybody have any experience with these? I just use Internet at home, no gaming or anything. It doesn't come with a CD drive, but these can be added easily. Just wondering about any pros or cons.

Several friends have Acer Netbooks. For easily portable internet access, they're quite good. Were I to be doing a lot of onsite programming of routers and other equipment, I'd definitely get one. However, my need for a portable computer currently involves writing and the keyboard is WAY too small for that on a regular basis, as is the screen.
 
Years ago I had an Acer desktop. Nothing but problems. I'd never buy another Acer product.
 
1. Make sure that you understand the difference between a netbook and a notebook....it's not just size, but functionality.
2. Acer has generally been considered to fall at the low end of the PC quality spectrum......
 
I know several people who bought Acer pcs and laptops because they were cheap and they all came to regret it sooner or later.
 
Well, now that a number of you have made me feel wonderful about my Acer desktop(kidding, and don't know how to do those smiley things). . .

I've had three desktop machines since 1996, and two of them, including the present one, have borne the Acer label. I haven't had any problems that could be traced to the fact that they were/are Acers. What I've never fully understood is what difference the name on the case makes, when it appears to me that the components used are the same ones used by the other manufacturers. The processors, for instance, are almost always made either by Intel or AMD, whether you get an Acer, Dell, HP, or etc. Is that not correct? And when I had my previous machine at least, nearby every brand used a Western Digital hard drive. And so forth.

Well, a bunch of you know far more about this than I do, so I'll let you comment.

I bought the cheapest laptop Sam's had in 2004. It was an Acer. Still using it and have never had a problem.

Prior to that, I bought his and hers refurbished Dell laptops. Both ended up in the trash within 2 years.

Close to two years on an Acer Extensa laptop here, no problems whatsoever.
 
I have a gateway netbook that is made by Acer... it works flawlessly.
I use it for work out here in the desert and shake the sand out of it a couple of times a week.
I wouldnt hesitate to buy an acer.

I have a story for you about Acer Laptops. I had one of the older Acer Aspires, and I was letting my sister in law use it while she watched my two year old son along with her two year old while my wife and I went out on a date. Well, upon return I find out that the two year olds had demolished my screen. I was a bit upset but plugged in an external monitor and kept going. The next thing they did was kill my touch pad mouse, went to a USB mouse and it kept going. Then they tore off every key on the keyboard. As usual I got a wireless and kept going. During the 5 years I had it it went through *that one hot place* and back and kept on going. I was finally reduced to nothing but the body of the laptop with no memory left, and external everything but it served me very well. That laptop was replaced with my current Acer desktop and I will continuously buy Acer. That was the first computer I had ever owned that didn't crash, didn't auto delete anything, just worked, and under all conditions. I highly recommend them.
 
Acer is on the lower end of capability and features, but work fine for the average internet and office user.

If you are worried about what level cache is used, how much cache is on the motherboard, the refresh rate for the graphics card, and such other things as most gamers find important, they are not a good choice. If you just want to play simple games, do letters and surf, they seem to work fine.

I am no computer guru, but have 40 years background in simple stuff.
 
...I have the older Acer Aspire notebook and it works fine for being over three years old. I have a 21" monitor, scanner, printer, mouse, and keyboard all hooked up to it via a USB octopus. I take just the notebook when we go RV'ing.
 
Iam now on my second acer laptop and have not had a problem with either one of them. Matter of fact if I were going to buy a new laptop today it would be an acer or toshiba.
 
Bought the Acer Aspire netbook before Xmas, travel with it constantly, no problems at all! Really a superb little computer. would by another in a heart beat.
 
Acers are fine. They are like any product, you can get a bad one or a good one.
Sounds like you are talking about a netbook. I would not touch a netbook in any way shape or forum. Too hard to type on. The sales of them are way down.
You would be better off buying a regular desktop. You can build one, or some companies will actually put the computer together for you. You can get one pretty reasonable, depending what you want.
The trouble with many of the brand names, is working on them. Many do not take generic parts. The parts are unique to the computer. Like if you say need a power supply for a Dell, you will probably have to go through them to get it.
When people call me about fixing them, I alwas hope that the parts are generic.
 
I'm pretty computer illiterate. My old Compac is still functional, but my space is at a premium, and that Acer looked cool. I have relatively small fingers, but I really need to go back to the store and try it. So far, the monitor is really nice, compared to that cinder block of an old one. Problem now is, I don't know what to do with the old one. It's not like it's in demand or a collectors item. Perhaps a 230gr FMJ out of the 'ole Springfield .45 is in order?
