Anyone have any info on this nice little town?

We might be going there to visit with my wife's brother and his wife
that will be there for the next 1.5 years.

Bucket list, food, or next town that might have more/better, shopping
just in case we show up there.

Thank you for any help.

Adam-Ondi-Ahman...

I had to look that one up. I figured it was somewhere in the Mid-East, but now I know it's a historic site in Missouri. Learn something new here every day! :o

Adam-Ondi-Ahman is a former Mormon settlement in Missouri that dates to the 1830s. Nevada Ed, you have plenty of Mormons in Reno, contact a Bishop or Stake President in town and ask them! This former settlement is little more, if any, than a sign indicating where it used to be. This location only has significance to anyone who buys into Latter Day Saint doctrine and early "church" history.

You want to know more just "Google" it. It is handy to have lived in Utah for the past 57 years.

Thanks for the information.

I was just hoping that someone might live there or close by but it looks like I will have to wait for them to get settled and call or write to us, on what life
is like down there.

He is a Mormon Bishop, that is on a mission for the church with his wife
and my wife asked me if we could some time go visit them, in the future,
since they will be gone for a while.

Thank you all, I will post on what happens if we get down that way and
what's up in the "Show me", state.

Sure would like to catch a few catfish, while down there but I don't think it is going to happen.

Later.

That isn't what you asked! Since you are in Reno have you ever been to Burning Man in the Black Rock Desert? That is how interesting that Adam-Ondi-Ahman is. Just about as interesting except it is farm land for miles and miles. He is going to make a 1000+ mile drive to find there is nothing. The closest town is Jameson, Mo, population 133, about 2 miles north. If he thinks he might want to live there he better be prepared to buy a flat-land farm. If he wants to see something more interesting tell him to visit Liberty, MO. and the Liberty jail that has more Mormon history to it than Adam-Ondi-Ahman. Liberty is about 60 miles away North East, in the Kansas City, MO. area.

Way back in my Vegas Days my Boss assigned me to Advise a Reserve Unit.
Turns out most them were Mormons.
One Morn the conversation turned to going on Mission.
It was bad place, ugly place, make sure you got your shots, don't go out at night.
One guy didn't respond, he was asked where he went.
'Switzerland'
I say. Your family must have a lot of Juice!
Later in private, one of the Reservists told me that was a good call!
His Granddad, Dad and Uncles all high ranking Church of LDS Officials.

Post #9, that last sentence I thought the 3 initials got mixed up until I figured it out. I was never real big on religions and the different beliefs, etc., but it finally hit me after a few minutes that those letters in that order are correct and mean something very different than Timothy Leary's church.

If you want to make a 1000 mile drive to nothing try this:

Angle Inlet, MN - Northernmost Point U.S.A. (Contiguous)

Put down that Quad. Time to Gun up!
My Favorite Mormon is Porter Rockwell.

A notorious gunslinger, wanted man, and devout Church member, Orrin Porter Rockwell led a life of paradox. His lethal accuracy with a shotgun and policy to "always shoot first … That way they know you're armed" made his time as a lawman controversial at best. Charged with murder or attempted murder on three occasions, Porter was acquitted twice and died before the last charge could come to courts. Despite his rough-and-tumble attitude, Porter Rockwell remained unshakably faithful to the Church and its leaders until his death in June 1878, serving as a body guard to Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. The incongruities and myths surrounding Rockwell's life have drawn the fascination of Mormons and non-Mormons alike. But here are a few curious tidbits you might not have known about Orrin Porter Rockwell.

I suppose there are numerous former Mormon settlements scattered around the country. I once lived in a smallish rural community in southern Ohio that was initially named Nauvoo, allegedly because there had briefly been a Mormon settlement there, probably during their westward trek in the 19th Century. Nauvoo as a place name has something to do with the LDS, but I do not know its source or meaning. I think there was once a fairly large Mormon settlement in Nauvoo IL.

Very interesting.

Due to the material, I did not want to push it, and get "Dinged"
just in case it might ruffle some feathers.

Sounds like I might need to take some reading material or chewing gum
for that trip ?

At least their should not be any traffic problems and plenty of home cooked, meals.

Including here in VT. Joseph Smith's birthplace is in VT, and a state historic site. I thought of including a link to it but I would surely get dinged, history be darned.

a easy day trip west to Kansas City, St Joseph, Leavenworth, Weston (quaint antique, wine, distillery & art town, recommend) or head south to Hermann (another recommend, German antique, art, bakery, wine & sausage country - Wurst Haus).. there are lots of great places nearby, just not there...
