After shooting long guns for years, I am now getting into handguns. I have a 586-3 6 inch barrel. I recently retired and moved to Arizona. I want to get a holster to carry it in when I go out on my property. We have some real safety issues down here on the border as I am sure you have read. Are there any 586 owners here who could recommend a certain brand/model? I intend to get a good belt and some speedloader pouches as well. Very much appreciate any advice! Thank you guys!!

The Bianchi 5BH or 5 BHL is a great holster. One is lined the other is not. You can find it at Midway. It is a great thumb break holster. I use it with all my K frames. The holster will fit both the K and L frame. It is also set up so that it can take 2 different size belts. One set of belt loops for your regular pants belt up to 1 and 3/4. The other loop is set up for a 2 and 1/2 duty belt.

Depending on what you're doing out on the property, and whether or not you're getting in and out of vehicles, you might find a shoulder rig (vertical given that barrel length) more convenient as compared to wearing it on your hip. Galco and Bianchi - among others - make nice shoulder rigs, as does the Italian company Vega if you can find them. If you're not familiar with this arrangement, try a 30 some dollar Uncle Mikes to see if you like the concept.

Arizona is an open carry state, and you're on your own land, so there'd be no real need to conceal it, however you could do so with a cover garment if you chose.

Sling an AKM over your shoulder, that would be my advice.

I occasionally use a Mika IWB holster for my 6" 686. I had Bob make it for a 4" 586, but with an open bottom, so it works for both of my L frames. It was fine getting in and out of vehicles and the gun disappeared under an untucked button down shirt. I'm only 5" 7", so if you aren't shorter than me (for your sake I hope you're not) or overweight you should expect similar results if you like IWB carry.

As Conn said, I'd keep a rifle handy, or carry one if possible. At the same time, I would keep my pistols on too.

My suggestion for a belt holster would be one of the Bianchi Cyclone #111 with a good Duty belt and a double Speedloader pouch. The Cyclone can be worn in either Strong Side or Cross Draw positions and I'd recommend using the Cross Draw if you're going to be getting in and out of a vehicle on a regular basis.

My true "First" choice Holster would be a Hoyt Front Break but I would stick with one of the "High Ride" styles. These are an excellent Strong Side carry Holster and were the "Holster of Choice" for many Years in the Law Enforcement when revolvers were also the sidearm of choice. Hoyt has been out of business for a number of Years but one of the Regular Sellers in the "Classifieds" frequently has samples of these are a very reasonable price. And, just for reference you can use any holster that is designed for a Colt Python and the same goes for the Speedloaders.

Here is robbt web page:

I've purchased a number of items from him and he has always done well by me.

And, just another "War Story" is the fact that I carried a pre Model 29 in one of these Holsters for several years while in Law Enforcement and I found it to be excellent even when seated in a vehicle.

I would recommend something OWB that sits fairly low to accomodate that 6" barrel. I have a short torso and wear my 686 often in a BladeTech belt holster. It sits so that the back of the cylinder is even with the belt. There is also a cut on the front so that you don't have to come all thee way to the belt line to clear the muzzle. Works well for me. I must say though, if I lived on the border, I would get a good rifle to carry for wandering my property lines. Remember, you're not just dealing with illegals, but dope smugglers as well. Northern Mexico iis fast becoming an open battleground fought over by at least 2 major DTOs (Drug Trafficking Organizations) as well as the Mexican government. Many of our Border ports of entry are armored not against DTOs, but against stray rounds fired by Federales and Mexican military. You have moved into the Old West, remember that!
