I recently came by a nickel 39-2. Mechanically the pistol is in excellent condition and by all indications has been shot very little. I got the thing for a song. My guess is that the pistol spent a considerable amount of time on a boat that was in salt water. The salt air took a toll on the old Smith with quite a bit of discoloration on top of the slide and some clouds elsewhere in the nickel finish. The nickel on the backstrap has peeled in the area of the checkering. There is absolutely no pitting anywhere on the pistol. Just discoloration and peeling. I would love to have this pistol restored to it's factory new condition but I don't want the gun ruined by some bozo with a buffing wheel that thinks "faster is better". I wish that the factory would restore these old guns but they refuse to restore anything that is out of production. Just like my two ex-wives the Smith and Wesson people have streets named after them: "One Way" I want this pistol returned to the condition it was in when it left the factory and I don't care what it costs. Can anyone recommend a really good gunsmith for this project?
