Hey All:

First post here.

Just picked up a snubbie 642-2 and I need a bigger grip for my hand.

What do you all recommend as a replacement? I understand I will sacrifice some "carry-ability" going with something larger and that is something I can live with.

Thanks in advance,

JD

JD,

For shooting comfort for larger hands, as well as for daily concealed carry, I get along very well with the Compact Grip for S&W round butt J Frames made by Pachmayer. It's not pretty, but it works very well for my larger hand size. There are several aftermarket manufacturers of wood grips that are also larger (longer, basically) that extend below the grip frame. These have different shapes but I personally don't carry my J Frames in my pocket normally and with holster carry, I don't find the additional length to be a problem with concealment. Hogue also makes a rubber grip of a different shape than the Pachmayer grips.

I personally prefer grips without finger grooves. They are OK if they fit your fingers, but are not much good if they don't. The Pachs don't have finger grooves except for the pinky finger at the bottom of the grip. They are not expensive to try. You can buy them from most aftermarket vendors or find them on eBay.

Welcome to the Forum! :)

That is one of the best lightweight carry guns ever made.

I like the Pachmayer compac's and have used them a good bit with my 642. (You can even pocket carry with them but you need a decent sized pocket.)

If you want wood Altmount makes some nice ones that cover the backstrap. If you don't want the backstrap covered I would recommend you check out Badger grips.

Here's some info on a couple other grip types I have tried on J frames.

The Hogue Tamers aren't much bigger than boot grips but are more hand filling. They cover the backstrap but I can't say that I felt much recoil reduction using them. The main thing I like about them is they prevent the tip of my trigger finger from contacting my thumb during a stroke which can prevent a flinch.

Pachmayr Grippers are large and work well for me as range grips. I believe they do effectively reduce recoil.

Some people seem to like the Ergo Deltas but after trying them several times at the range, they now reside in a drawer. I never got good results or felt comfortable shooting them.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM. IMHO (AND THAT OF MASSAD AYOOB), THE BEST GRIP THAT YOU CAN PUT ON ANY J FRAME THAT WILL BE USED FOR SELF DEFENSE, IS THE CRIMSON TRACE LASER GRIP. BELOW IS MY 642-1 WEARING CT LG-405s, THEY CUSHION THE BACKSTRAP. I FAVOR PACHMAYR COMPACS ALSO. MY 2 1/2" 686 IS WEARING A PAIR. THOSE ARE PRESENTATION GRIPS ON ITS 8 3/8" BROTHER…………..

Welcome from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
I've got Pachmayr Compact grips on my 442. It fits my big hands better and still conceals well.
It goes everywhere I go, either in my pocket or on my belt in one of my own hand crafted leather holsters.

First, a big thank you to all of you. My first post and I have some really good information to start with. I appreciate your time.

While I usually gravitate towards magnas, for a covered backstrap that increases reach but still a 2 finger grip for concealment I go to tauru....I mean Remington 38 special stock grips. :D

Been using the Hogue Monos for a couple years, like them better than anything else I tried.
