I am thinking about parting with a CS-1 four inch 686 ( 99.9% in the box with everything) . I understand that they are not as rare as the 3 inch models. How much of a premium are they worth comparing to the regular PRE LOCK/MIM four inch 686 in th ethe same condition? Thank You .

Not as rare as the 3 inch guns, but still much sought-after. I don't do a great job of tracking prices, but I would guess (and be willing to pay) about $200 over the price of a similar 686. Great guns. I have a modest collection of early L frames, and the 4" CS-1 is a favorite to shoot. If you sell it, don't be suprised if you're kicking yourself in the butt in a year or two.

I just bought a 4" CS1 from a seller on this board last week. $585 shipped, described as "excellent condition" with paperwork, box, etc.

In my carefully considered opinion, as a shooter, it that the CS-1 is a premium revolver in every way. Mine came with a very nice action and it only got better when I added a spring kit. It has an excellent single action trigger, also. I had a very nice Ruger Security Six that I had work on the action done by a professional. It seemed ok in every way. Off a rest it shot perfectly ok. However, I could never shoot it offhand worth a hoot. I am a reasonably accomplished Bullseye shooter, had no problems with any number of Smiths but was never able to shoot the Ruger. It went on down the road.

My CS -1 shot well right out of the box. A 4" barrel "does not a target gun, make", however I shot it nearly as well as my longer barreled revolvers. It is about the ideal platform for the .357 magnum, IMO. It makes a superb trail gun for the woods rambler. It's an ideal handgun for the bird hunter (for sitting rabbits and wounded grouse).

I would hate to have to say, "I told you so" a year from now when you are bemoaning the loss of your 4" CS-1...

Yeah I know I may regret it. But I do have several 3 inch S&W in .357 magnum. This one is just a safe queen.
