advice on a small scratch inside the barrel

I found a scratch, which is protruding, inside the barrel of my 686-5 6". I don't think it was there before but I'm unsure how it got there. The scratch is just after the forcing cone and runs across the barrel not along it. I think it's about a 2 mil long.

Anyone have advice on the potential effected safety and accuracy of the pistol?

do you know if acccuracy on your piece is below par?

I had a Shorty 45 with several similiar scratches on the muzzle end.

I spoke to someone at the PC and they said that will affect accuracy.

they changed the barrel under warranty.

since yours is on the other end, not sure but if it scrapes lead off, I would say yes on affecting accuracy.

if you bought brand new, I would certainly inquire about a warranty replacement.

It is hard to see how deep the scratch is, but I do not think it will affect either accuracy or safety. Personally I would keep shooting it and not worry about it unless accuracy was noticeably affected.

the PC person also told me that some scratches can be polished out.

I agree that if the gun is accurate, leave alone.

a couple of boxes of jacketed bullets may cure the problem for you.

I also have trouble believing it could affect accuracy in any way we could see, but I suppose it's possible.

A radial "scratch" at that location is likely from the forcing cone cutter catching a chip and gouging the cut surface. It should not affect accuracy at all, or even result in barrel leading. Firing a couple boxes of full magnum loads followed by thorough cleaning will smooth it out enough.

I'm not sure what you mean by a "protruding" scratch. If it is not affecting accuracy, it is probably minor. If it is causing a leading issue in that area, you might try this: Put a dab of Flitz on a patch and give this area a good stroking. This may be all it takes to polish a rough edge down that may be shaving your bullets. Your "protruding scratch" may simply be a little bit of lead.

Thanks all. Good advice. I was a bit worried about it initially.

The accuracy appears OK. I'm going to do some scrubbing as tdan advised.

Bullseye, you're right. I can't help using those .357 mag loads. I love them.
