Advice on keeping M&P .40 "ready"

Off topic: How in the heck did that idiot get in again? May be too many young people that don't know their history and believe in change.. I sure don't know for the life of me how he made it in again..And I'll tell you what the Vice president scares the hell out of me even more! G

Unless you have little kids or dumb adults theres no reason not to keep the gun ready. It won't go off on ifs own, mag springs do go bad from being compressed and the striker wont go bad from being compressed

Again... on my person is out of the question unless I want to go to jail. "Arming yourself right" is no longer possible in my state unless you can "prove the need".
While I personally would be comfortable with it in the house (loaded), I am not comfortable with having it loaded based on the others that come into my house - nieces & nephews, etc. Even though it's out of reach, you never know.
If you are going to have it under lock and key - no matter what kind - in your scenario (3 am crash & pounding chest) you'll never get it out in time either.
I'm comfortable with having it partially ready

It should only take you no more than a few seconds to get your handgun from a quality handgun safe, even in the dark. There are several brands out there that provide reasonable security (when bolted down) and still have your gun quickly accessible to you. That way you can leave it loaded and it will remain out of reach of others.

Fast Action Safe

As I have a 14 year old grandson in my home I keep my gun locked with a well hidden spare key within easy access at night & put it there just before I turn in for the night. The gun is loaded but not chambered & next to my bed along with a working (I check) LED flashlight. Since I'm the last one to go to bed at night nobody is aware of its bedtime existence. Since I get up with my wife in the morning & we're the first to arise I holster my gun when I get dressed. At that time I rack a round in the chamber & top off the mag. I'm seriously thinking of keeping the gun in the unlocked safe next to my bed loaded & chambered with the +1 round in the mag at night. I always keep the other two mags loaded & next to the gun at night or on my person during the day. I alternate my carry & night-ready guns between an M&P 40C & full size M&P 40. All mags are loaded all the time. I cycle them at the range. The gun I'm not using is locked in the safe along with the spare mags & loaded but not chambered.

I try to balance gun accessibility with being secure & safe from inquisitive fingers. My grandson is very responsible & has no idea where I store the gun but I never want to test him & he has friends. He knows I carry all the time & for all he knows I wear it to bed, lol.

Watch re-chambering the same round each morning. There have been documented instances of FTF due to the primer becoming damaged from this. The one I read was a police officer who unloaded each night and reloaded in the morning. When he needed it, the round failed to fire.

Just two? Here's how I order my ammo...
ShipmentError_zpsfed97cdd.jpg

Each of those cases has 20 boxes in it. Well, the .223 is loose packed, but the end result is the same. Yes, it's addictive and expensive. Doesn't have the side effects that crack does though...:D

Don't be critical of his two boxes of ammo. I see that you only have six boxes of ammo.

:) :) :)

Also rechambering the same round over and over tens to reset the bullet deeper in the case. Not only will this make it harder for the gun to feed the round each time it is chambered it also will bring up chamber pressure the deeper a bullet is set. It could be dangerous to the one holding the gun .. You the Good Guy! At least mark your rounds for set with a sharpie fine point..And check them often. George

I,too,am new to the semi(have a 9mm Shield)and I have a question. When I carry (in a separate compartment in my purse)I plan on having a round in the chamber-do I have my safety on or off? This safety is stiff-will it loosen up any?

Liz I recommend a MIC (trigger guard) type holster if you will be carrying in a purse vs. relying on a thumb safety that could be inadvertently deactivated as things move and shift around. The beauty of this type of holster is you draw the weapon and don't need to do anything else to put it into action (unless you also use the thumb safety). The lanyard is secured to your purse and can be adjusted for length. The holster snaps off when the weapon is drawn. The best option would be to carry on your person with a good holster since purses can be snatched or not be available when you need it...but if carrying in a purse is it, then this is what I recommend.

Thanks,I've never heard of these.I also have never carried on my person but thought many times about purse-snatching.Looks as if there many changes coming!

Yes if it's in your purse it's not on your person and therefore you're not truly in control of it.. Consider some type other carry Like this.. At least it should be on your person .. If a gun is not on your person your not in control of it you put your purse down on a counter or even in a drawer it's not under your control. Your right to think of someone taking your purse and maybe using your gun on you!! Think of something else maybe like this.. I don't sell them but am having my wife think about one heck we both can use it.. UnderTechUndercover Compression Concealment Clothing - YouTube Be safe!! George

holy chit 56 days...And i was Complaining about Florida's 3 day holding period when i bought my m&p.

Another reason I love Arizona. Walk in the store...last time it was Cabela's...pick out a gun, fill out the paperwork, pay at the register and walk out with the gun. Get to the car and load it up with the ammo I just bought and drive home. All legal, as it should be.

Another idea, thanks! Usually when I'm out and about I keep my current gun(a Ruger .38 LCR)in a fanny pack.My Shield is a bit larger and I don't know if I would be as comfortable with it as I am my Ruger. As I mentioned this is all so different and new.I guess my main concern is accidental discharge.

Glad you got the mags.

This is a product that I can recommend, you can put it in a drawer or mount it to a wall, if wall mounted you might want to do it upside down so when the door opens it creates a type of shelf.
Amazon.com: Sentry Safe Quick Access Safe 0.08 Cubic Feet: Home Improvement

It holds a FS M&P & extra mags perfectly.

+1 for the Sentry Safe. I recommend it to customers frequently. It was money well spent, I actually keep two handguns and a tactical flashlight in it right under my night stand

MA may have crappy gun laws that prevent me from being able to purchase the firearms I really want. But I don't have to wait when I do buy! 56 days is crazy!

It does sound like someone should be lobbying the state for violating federal law 7day wait as mentioned earlier and holding your firearm after that. If they can't do the background check fast enough they need to rethink the system and stop the wait period until they do.

In MA the background check is a marval to listen in on. Seller calls and like a finely tuned machine rattles digits and letters off when questioned and in a matter of a minute the check is done!

On topic. I keep my 40c 10+1 in its a locked nanovault case at all times but it is my CCW. My home defense firearm (HK P30L) is bedside also 10+1 locked in a nano vault. The key is in easy reach but hidden well. I practice a few times a week pulling the gun in the dark and have gotten quite proficient at it even when throwing in dropped key events. I do have two warnings that buy me a few more seconds though. A beep from the alarm system when any window or door opens and a dog that barks at anything that moves outside and the alarm beep when both my wife and I are in the house.

I have reread this thread and changed my mind about the whole empty chamber loaded magazine issue. I no longer support this practice and here's why: I was getting dressed to go out after showering and I slid the M&P 9 into its holster and clipped in over the belt IWB. Then I reached for the spare mag holder loaded with two magazines. Then the thought crossed my mind, "Why on Earth do you need spare magazines if you're carrying a gun that doesn't have a round chambered?" It weirded me out as I thought about all the possible scenarios where I could have to come from behind the eight ball. The round in the chamber just made so much more sense even in the striker fired gun. I believe this was foolish of me to recommend and I apologize. I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong and to think I'd see everything coming in time to rack a shell in was dead wrong.

I read a true story of people finding a 1911 with loaded magazine in the attic of a deceased WWII Vet that had it loaded for 30+ years with the original military ammo. A gun mag was called about it and what they did is take the loaded mag out and shoot it in a modern 1911.

Not only did every round feed, fire and eject (with some smoke) but it also locked back the slide after it was empty. With better spring technology today, it is most certainly not an issue keeping mags loaded.

As for a loaded chamber, your other hand or a sharp ledge may not be available to rack the slide, nor will you have time to.

No such thing exists my friend, that's your county that does that and if you get your CWFL you carry the gun out that day. There is only a handful of counties that are filled with kommie scum that actually do this, I live in one of them, only it's "5 business days"...
