It looks like where they test fired it from the factory.
Its just brass off the shells where it slide over the rail and the brass from the shell came off.
Or do you think the gun was fired by the store you bought it from more than the test fires? Does it look like a lot of carbon also on the gun.
It will clean up easily, however the factory usually fires a round or 2 thru guns to test them.

Since its garbage to you and a nice weapon to most of us. How bout I give you $100 for it right now, shipped to my FFL. You seem as though you'd rather have the $100. Just saying.

It's just a real chore to clean a new firearm. Spend an hour or so to get to know the internals. It may take a couple of range sessions to really get it clean. New guns are dirty and don't clean up easily.

Best, Rick

First of all, thanks to those who gave honest help. I have never bought a gun this dirty from the factory. The army exchange doesn't have a range in the store and they don't do trades/returns, so no, it came from the factory like this. From the amount of metal shavings and caked carbon it seemed like a box went through it.

You want the gun for $100? Sure thing, I'll send directly to you. Send me your info.

You're kidding right? All my M&P's looked like that when I got them new. Just the way they are. Nothing wrong at all. Shoot it and enjoy.

I was in my LGS yesterday (the heathens are open on Sunday!) and I heard a customer asking one of the salesmen why there was an envelope with a shell inside it. The salesman explained that it was the test fired shell, and that in some states/locations it had to be given to the local authorities, etc. When the customer left, another salesman asked the first salesman, "Do we really know that S&W fires each and every gun? Or, do they just fire one gun a lot, and stick the shells in all the other guns?"

Maybe you got that gun! :p

J/K...it may be residue from firing, and some sort of preservative, etc. If you've ever had a Glock, they come with some orange stuff that not only protects but helps break it in. It should clean up and be ready to go. As you've already been advised, the lever is painted yellow to help locate it, since you will need to engage it (push it down) to field strip the pistol.

Normal. You're not making love to it, it's a tool.
Clean it , lube it, shoot it!!!

When the M&P pistols were first released, we were told that each and every M&P was test-fired with 3 test magazines loaded with 5 rounds each. More recently I've heard they were test-firing each gun with 20 rounds. Brass and powder fouling, combined with packing/shipping oil, does make for a bit of a dirty gun, huh?

The sear disconnect lever is painted yellow to make it initially easy for the new owner/user to see (for field-stripping).

Is that *** still available for $100 with shipping directly to me?
Please advise.

Yours seems a lot dirtier than mine was, but I wouldn't worry about it. Clean it well and you should be good to go. Also the yellow on yours is the brightest I've seen. Enjoy it, their a nice piece.

Take it to the range, and shoot it, then tell us your not going to keep it.

Talked to a SW rep, was told that they put at minimum 1 full magazine through each gun, and if issues are discovered, they fix, test and fire a **** load more. Guess I had one that needed fixing. Will give my first range report later.

You will get $100 dollars worth of something, but it won't be my dirty @ss gun that took 2 hours to clean, lol.
