Age by serial number

I have a 17-6 with the serial number BBM5712how can I find its year of production. Its a 6” barrel ( no under lug )

The standard catalog says the 17-6 arrived in 1990 and the -7 in 1994. The serial number you list doesn't match what I'd expect as the book says 1990-1994 all had SNs starting with BDY through BSC although the records are less than straightforward on SNs in the '90s.

The -6 was a full lug gun although the catalog notes that some early ones were without the lug. Are you sure of the SN? Pictures might help. And welcome to the Forum.

The 17-6 came out in 1990 and went through 1994, but your SN should be an ABC1234 format. I think you have referenced an assembly number. Look on the underside of the butt, removing the stocks if necessary. Yours should begin with a "B".

Welcome! Do you have the original box with the end label?

BBM is a true SN prefix, PMBBM is not. 1991 is an approximate guess.

No box unfortunately - bought through a dealer in Ireland.The grips are new ones I fitted.

Nice, BBM makes sense. I think it is a fairly scarce gun without the under lug. Enjoy it.

 Model 17-6 , Blue, 4" Barrel 4 wide rib no underlug  Serial BDE 5305 Shipped July 1989

Yours seems to be between the two.
The non underlug wide rib barrel carried over from the 17-5
