This morning, just as I was hanging up my jacket, my office phone rang. It was one of my tenants who is just the most gracious, upbeat gentleman you'd ever meet in your life. He reminds me of Jimmy Stewart. He started to recite:

"On the road to Mandalay,
Where the flyin'-fishes play,
An' the dawn comes up like thunder
Outer China 'crost the Bay!

"Miss Barbara, isn't it a beautiful morning today! I just had to call you and tell you what a glorious morning it is! And would you believe I paid 10 cents in 1935 to hear Lawrence Tibbett sing that song, all my friends thought I was crazy, but it has stayed with me all my life." Mr. Russ is 89.

(PS here is the song)

And then only a few minutes ago, I had to bring some certification paperwork to Miss Gert, who is still stunningly beautiful, meticulous and very sharp. She looked the papers over and said, "Ok, I can do this. I'll get it to you later today. Gee, I wonder how old people manage with it??" Miss Gert is 92.

I knew a retired gentleman a few years back who stayed young by associating himself with younger people. He said he didn't want to pick up the habits of old people.

When I was a young kid I went to church faithfully every Sunday with my father. It was a ritual for us to take home the church sextant, Mr Cook who walked the two miles to church. One Sunday, no Mr Cook. Being concerned about his absence, we went directly to his house after chirch to check on him. There he was, on the roof of his three story house nailing on some repair shingles before the forecasted storm arrived. He was 96 years old. We immediately took over the chore for him. He did make it past 100.Delightful man to listen to.

A couple of years ago my mom was complaining about her friend Lea's driving.

"You know, I don't like to ride with Lea anymore. She used to be such a good driver, too. I don't know what's the matter with her".

I asked her how old Lea was. She calculated for a few seconds and replied, "97". (My mom is almost 91 now.)

I prefer to hang with young people. I enjoy their company more and their values are closer to mine than to people of my own generation. Especially that 'hooking up' thing.

This describes my wife's grandmother to a tee.

A friend of mine, 91 yrs old (30 years older than me), gave me his deer rifle after this past season ... said he "finally has to hang it up" ... has macular degeneration in his dominant eye and can no longer see to "humanely shoot a deer". At 91 he still rides a stationary bike 3 miles every day, plays 9 holes of golf with his old buddies twice a week, and goes dancing with his "lady friend" every Tuesday evening. He is quite an inspiration to me, and I can only hope to stay "young" like him in my coming years !

You can learn a lot by talking to old folks!

Hey Barb, I want to send you a funny e-mail/video commercial that is related to this subject. Is that OK?

I have received 'Senior Discounts' for years due to my grey/white hair. I did turn sixty last summer... don't know it most days. It really is just a number... kinda big number. It beats the alternative, of course. Plus, it's fun aggravating the blue-hairs in line at Publix on Wednesdays - 5% discount day.

"Wow, green bannanas... aren't we confident today?". Yeah, still some Bart Simpson in me...

I had a birthday three weeks ago.A patient asked if I was going to retire.I replied "I have worked the first 75 years for me,now I'm on the Obama plan and will probably work the next 75 for him".
As others have said hang around with a younger crowd,be thankful for each day, spend time in the outdoors thanking God you are able to be there-then let whatever happen.

I married a 17 year younger woman. She is doing her best to keep me alive. I am not sure its keeping me young though. It does beat looking at some old snag my age.

My grandmother lived to be 106 , up until the last two years of her life she ate one egg, bisc. and gravy and two cups of coffee for breakfast. She was two years old when her folks made the land run in Oklahoma. the stories she could tell.

Actor Bruce Willis surely agrees, having just married a 30- year-old lingerie model. He is 54.

But age is often less a factor in how people relate than are personality and common interests.

I'm sure that some of the women here will point out that Mr. Willis's ex, Demi Moore, has also married a much younger spouse, Ashton Kutcher.
(Both couples and the three teenaged Willis daughters attended the ceremony, and seemed to get along fine.

I like Jim Shugart's comment above. If one associates with younger people and has the same interests and values that he always did, he will age slower. It's best to know people of several age ranges, and to have varied interests and to stay up-to-date on the news.

By the way, did anyone see the entertainment news last night, about Valerie Bertinelli? She still looks great in a bikini. Her body is astonishing in a woman of her age. She's about to be on some magazine cover. Christie Brinkley is also very well preserved. Bertinelli is 48. Brinkley is over 50, I think.

Among men, Harrison Ford and Bruce Willis seem to stay in shape well.

I think that the key to keeping young is to eat sensibly, exercise regularly, keep active socially, and hang around like-minded people. Hanging around folks my age who are active and younger folks, seems to help me. The shooting sports are a great lifetime sport and gives me an opportunity to be around folks from all walks of life and all age groups.

I joined the YMCA in December. I have really been working at it with the elliptical trainer, lap swimming and steam room. It has helped me physically and improved my outlook. I am a lot more relaxed and cheerful. I notice that I move around like I'm younger.

I started teaching some 6th grade kids this year. Good kids, and like a fizzy tonic. I quit going down to the cafe to drink coffee because of all the garrulous old f***s rehashing their misspent youth and broadcasting their opinions to the whole place. What a downer!

The wife and I walk 3 miles a day regularly and probably ought to take up something outrageous. Just because you're going to die sometime is no reason go brain-dead just because you can.

Thanks, Barb!
What a great thought!

it's my b-day, and I'm NOT counting!
