Aim point vs Eotech?

Assuming price is not a factor, which brand would you go for on your AR?

I will be using it for home defense, target shooting, tactical competitions, and taking more classes (it will endure a lot of abuse).

My average range will be anywhere from 5 to 50 yards, maybe more on rare occasions.

What would you all suggest?

Many things to consider here. Eotech provides a larger field of view as well as an enhanced reticle. With the dot in the center of a circle, and the larger sighting window, target acquisition is faster. Shooting with both eyes open, the operator has a clear view of the entire area, not just the area seen through the sight tube. Battery life seems to be the biggest detractor, as operating a laser takes significantly more energy than running an LED.

Aimpoint brings durability and battery life to the table. The Comp M2's and Comp M4's have been in use by the Army and Air Force for years. They have taken the beating and banging of use and abuse and continue to keep our military in the fight. As to battery life, Aimpoint measures it in years, not just hours. The Comp M4's (M 68), battery life is shown to be as high as 500,000 hours on a single battery, depending on mode. This is considered by many a set it and forget it sight. Using both eyes open, the Aimpoint gives similar performance to the Eotech for target acquisition, although IMHO, the Eotech has a slight edge due to its' larger sight window.

Either will perform well for your stated uses, but I'd go with the Aimpoint based on battery life alone. Nothing could be worse than to have a sight die in the middle of a competition or a fight.

Good Luck and good shooting. :D

Both are designed to be used with both eyes open. A larger window only means less critical placement of your cheek on the weapon.

I have both, but the only one I'd go back for seconds is the AimPoint. The low profile, rugged construction, ability to use protective caps and, most important, the battery life, give the AimPoint a decisive advantage, IMO.

I also have an AimPoint 3x magnifier, which has the same rugged construction as the sight itself. It is compatible with both the Aimpoint and Eotech (using a LaRue tilt mount), and doesn't affect the zero.

It's like a "Chevy vs. Ford" debate. I think it comes down to personal preference. Guys in our organization use both. Some love the EOTECH "halo" around the center dot. I don't like the extra clutter, and prefer the single dot of the COMP M. But definitely try them both before you make a choice.

[soap box]For home defense the AR is a poor choice. You'd be better off using a $350 shotgun than buying a $500-$800 optic.[/soap box]

OK, now that I got that out of my system, my choice is the EOTech. I find the 65MOA circle with the 1MOA dot very easy to use. It also gives me aim points at different yardages. Check this out:

It can also be used for ranging:

As far as battery life is concerned, it will depend on how you use it. If you're like 99% of the AR owners out there, it's a non issue. The batteries in my EOTech 556.A65 will last about 800 hours under normal use. That's 160 days if I used it 4 hours at a time. That's three years of using the gun every weekend at a match. Most people don't use their ARs that much.

Now, if you intend on turning the sight on and leaving it on for days at a time, the Aimpoint is the only way to go. Battery life is so long as to be infinite. Just don't forget to change the batteries every two years if you leave it on all the time.

As for durability, well, they are both super tough. Either will stand up to any use you'll put your gun through. This was fun to watch:

Aimpoint or EoTech, can't go wrong with either one. The biggest factor in choosing one or the other is the condition of your eyes and your visual perception. I hit 40. My eyes changed. All of a sudden I perceived a LED dot to be fuzzy. My eyes have no issue with the EoTech holographic.

[counter point soap box] A long gun is a poor choice for home defense. A long gun requires two hands to operate. A long gun can be more cumbersome clearing corners within a residence. A semi-auto handgun has more rounds, is easier to handle in a home than a long gun, and can be operated one handed. I can use the free hand to open or close doors, grab family, use the phone to call 911, etc. [/counter point soap box] :D

I'm with Rastoff on the EoTech, even though my lowly 512 A65 doesn't have the bullet drop reticule.

The other thing to consider is battery life. I hear an Aimpoint Micro can be left on for years and still be good to go. Just leave it on so it's ready to go at a moment's notice.

My 512 A65 does not have anywhere close to the battery life of an Aimpoint Micro. I can turn it on and it has a longer and shorter auto-off timer. The offset to the decreased battery life is that mine uses common AA batteries.

[Counter counter soap box] shotgun over penetrates more than a 5.56 .....and faster reload [/ counter counter soapbox]

Price was not a factor. I chose the Aimpoint H1. Primary reason was small size and weight, and I find the 2MOA dot to be a good compromise for short and longer distances. I purchased both the H1 and mount from LaRue.

For your defined use of home defense and distances not exceeding 50yds, I'd lean toward the EOTech because you'll likely find the 65MOA ring a bit faster for point and click close work.

Check around. Lots of places sell them. I bought my EoTech in December when EoTech usually runs a rebate program. I got a rebate of $60.

When choosing an optic for a battle rifle there are only five words that you need to know.

----> The Aimpoint is still on.

That video was great.:)

Everyone's eyes are different, which makes it almost impossible to recommend one good type of optic over another.

I've looked through both an Aimpoint and Eotech. The one I liked better is not the one I thought I'd prefer based on everything I'd read or seen beforehand. There's just no way to tell which one you'll like better until you actually see one. In fact, there's no way to tell if you'd actually like either an Aimpoint or Eotech style optic before you see them.
