Well, it was in Texas and Bozo was sitting in another guy's pick-up truck. A Texas jury will probably understand.
Here in southern Colorado automobile theft is so common that police response time might be measured in days rather than hours. Buddy of mine had his truck stolen last year, abandoned in a parking lot, towed away on a complaint from the property owner, and he was only notified when the towing company wanted someone to pay the towing and storage fees couple weeks later.
Another friend had his car stolen, then learned that it was involved in a hit and run with serious injuries. He was served with a lawsuit for the damages caused by his vehicle after it was stolen, and his insurance company had to pay up under Colorado laws specifying that the registered owner is liable for such damages.
Another buddy recovered his stolen car from the towing yard, paid the fees, took the car home and found narcotics and a pistol. Called the local cops, they showed up a day later, impounded the car as evidence. Couple months later he got to pay another tow bill and storage fees. No explanation.
Twenty years ago my truck was stolen. When recovered it cost me towing fees and a few hundred to replace damaged ignition lock and electrical. Bozo was ordered to pay restitution as part of his probation agreement, never paid a dime, and was discharged from probation while in jail for another crime.
People are getting fed up with rampant theft and revolving doors at the courthouse.
I'm not feeling a lot of love for the predators among us.
