I haven't been on an airplane since the good old Army sent me to Korea

I am going to Alaska the middle of August.
Just how close does the airlines measure the bags when you get on?
My bag measures 61 3/4 the way I measure it and I sure don't want to pay those oversize charges
What are you thoughts? Do I need to buy new luggage?
Also, has anyone chartered halibut fishing out of Whittier? any recommendations for a company?

They'll weigh it if it's stowed, and you might have to pay extra for more weight, not larger size. If you're going to bring it as a carry-on, it will have to fit inside a little box they use for a dimension scale.

Your best bet is to check with your airline to see what their policy is.

I think it depends on which airline you have choosen. Some charge extra depending upon your body size. If I understand you correctly, your bag is an immense size depending again on just how you measured it. They not only go by size but also weight of the luggage. There are also restrictions on what you can personally carry on board too. My advice is to contact your carrier and the airport for the true skinny of just what you can carry on your person and your bag size/weight restrictions. The 'GrayHound with wings' is no fun to use for travel and no place to joke about anything...

I don't know anything about the "rules" but based on personal observation, if you can drag it and lift it to an overhead bin and crush it enough to close the door, it is considered carry-on and OK. They give extra points if the bag is dropped a couple of times on a seated passenger. This is a BIG sore point with me!

unfortunately, it really depends on the airline. they all have pretty much the same restrictions, it is how they are actually implemented that changes. For example, when the wife and I went to Peru, they actually had a measuring tape in addition to the little measuring box for carry ons. When we went to France, they didn't care one way or another. Most domestic airlines don't seem to be too strict about carry on size, but will definitely get you if you check a bag.
