Almost Heaven West Virginia

Well the day has finally come. I wired money on Wednesday, signed paperwork Thursday and seller signed Friday. My wife and I now own 50 acres on top of a mountain in Greenbrier County WVa...
I hear a John Denver song in the background :)

If they [bigfoot]show up, do not feed them, nor 'gift' them anything.
Word is, they can get really 'clingy' if you do that.

And remember: "Pics or it didn't happen" (Footprints don't count.)

Looks and sounds wonderful.
I hope you have plans to get a 4WD pickup if you don’t already have one. Small tractor with roll bar and front end bucket will be a good idea too if you can swing it.
An AWD or 4WD car is a good idea too.

I am green with envy. It has always been my dream to own a small hunting property, but my wife and I have different opinions of what is country. Any drive more than 10 minutes to a kroger and or mall is her idea of being in the country. We moved to a small town just east of New Albany Ohio in 1999 and built a house that was on the edge of civilization as far as she was concerned. Now, it is becoming a sprawling urban area and looks to get worse since Les Wexner, Intel, Google and Microsoft have decided we will be the Silicon Valley of the east.

I think you will spend many fine years enjoying the front porch, quiet nights and star filled skies around the fire.

I’m more than ready. I maintain my current home on 5 acres my cabin on 7 acres and 95 acre hunting lease. I drive a new F 250. I’ve got a 4WD kubota compact with loader, box blade, brush hog and 6’ blade. For giggles my wife drives a Bronco with 32” tires.

What is your elevation? IIRC, our home in north GA is 2,960.

We have bears there too.

Colby, house will set at approximately 2300 ft. Back or top of property goes to about 2800’ lots of benches in between that the deer are running like crazy

Congratulations! That is a spectacular piece of property. Pulling up and moving like that is a big undertaking but ultimately well worth it.
I just left Maine where I had been my whole life due to the weather and the politics. Selling in Maine and buying in Arizona, not to mention the actual move itself was one of the more stressful things I have been through, the end result was everything I had hoped it to be!

Madmikeb, ya just gotta turn the page sometimes. I watched my sister and brother in law do it last year. They moved to South Carolina. It will be hard I’m sure. I built my home as the general contractor. My hands touched most of this house during construction. I built my hunting cabin with my son. It was supposed to be my legacy. The place grandpa built……. But this state has made it impossible for us to stay. Politics, weather, cost of living etc……. My son is in Tennessee and will never come back to NY to live. My step son will go off to college in another year and I doubt he’d want to come back either.

Bald1, a former co-worker and his wife sold their home and most of their belongings back in April and started hunting for retirement home in the mountains. They bought a place near Sylva, NC and are quite pleased. Both Mitchell and his wife are adjusting to mountain life slowly but surely. Neither of them had ever seen a wild bear before nor a herd of coyotes. Their current life is much different from what it was in metro Atlanta.

So the deal goes like this. I told my wife we can build any house she wants on a mutually agreed upon property. BUT if I’m selling the cabin I have to be able to walk out my door and be hunting. I have the same setup at home but it’s less than 6acres. Finding acreage to build a home is easy. But I didn’t want to be sitting in a treestand listening to a lawn mower. It had to be remote. I think she loves it more than I do lol. We’re not going crazy on new house. Probably 1500-1600 sq ft. 3 bed 2 bath. Probably a walk out basement just because of terrain. We are fine with no basement though. I want a 24x30 pole barn but am willing to downsize a bit if needed……. Hell after 55 yrs in NY , i’d live in a tent.

Man, you are more than prepared.
Carry a small handgun everyday. Remote areas are not as safe as they used to be because of the meth-heads and drug cartels.

Well it’s funny because one of the things I just mentioned to a frien is I’m looking forward to carrying 17 rds in my 9mm instead of 10……. I was considering selling my Beretta Tomcat with crimson laser grips. My wife says no, I’ll carry that in WVa. She doesn’t have a NY permit.

Dopers have ruined much of the old “ remote places” N. of Asheville, N.C., have 1 second cousin still there. All my great Uncles and Aunts passed away years ago so not much use to visit anymore, sad.

No sign of dopers or illegal activities. Probably because real estate is so damned expensive in that area. And frankly I don’t believe the locals would tolerate it.

SWEETMK, you are correct. I’m about an hr WNW of Roanoke. I’ve admired your property in previous post.
