Some of you may remember that my father was a navigator in a B-58 Hustler. Unfortunately, he was killed when he had to bail out on a training mission over Texas in 1967 when his parachute didn’t open. I was 6 years old.

Today while looking around on YouTube, I found the following video and it reminded me of a happy childhood memory. Sometime before 1967, probably closer to 1965-66, I was given a toy jet fighter helmet similar to this one. It wasn’t this one because it came out in 1958. Apparently, the Steve Canyon show was only on TV in 1958-59. I was wondering if any of you guys had one of these as a child? The coolest thing I remember about the helmet was the oxygen mask. It had a little round replaceable disk in it that distorted your voice so it sounded like it did on TV. I remember it was my favorite toy for a while.

Never had that toy. Sorry about your Dad. I had another helmet, like a tank helmet. It had a sand texture.

I had one similar to that but it was about 1953. It was sold on the Buck Rogers program, the name of which I don't recall at the moment, it was a looong time ago. It may have been "Buck Rogers Space Ranger".

We lived in the DFW area when I was young and one of my vivid memories is my Dad taking my brother and me to a hill that overlooked the runways close to the Carswell Air Force Base. The objective was to see the new B-58 Hustler fighters taking off and landing.

My Dad, who lost the vision in his left eye in combat in Korea, remarked how happy he was when they saw the air support coming in during combat. It was much later in his life that he would ever talk about his experiences in combat, and that was minimal.

Thanks for prompting a pleasant memory of my father and God bless your family for such sacrifice for our nation's freedom. It's possible I saw one of the Hustlers in which your father flew.

Sorry about your father, tough growing up without one.
Thanks for posting that commercial. Yes, I had one of those too. Very cool for the time. They go for a lot more today, if you can find one intact.

I was a bit older but remember that toy . I wanted one of the Rocky Jones helmets. I got a BB gun. I was around the Hustler a bit at work. Beautiful plane. I went on a reconnaissance plane ...must have had a 100 cameras on it. I'm sorry about your dad.

I had the tank helmet that member Rudi mentioned. The sand texture...yes! Can't remember what I had for lunch yesterday but I can still see that toy helmet from almost 60 years ago.

Thanks for the condolence replies for my father. Of course, I think the B-58 was the coolest aircraft ever built.

I tried putting some different search parameters in google figuring I might find the helmet that I was looking for, but no joy.:( It’s funny how our memory works, Fullmetaljacket.

I won my Steve Canyon Helmet in the early 60's while in the Boy Scouts! With my lucky number (22).The Show was only on in the late 50's but there was a series of comic books that continued into the mid 60's
