Altamont grips. Threads gone when you...

try to tighten them, which you have to do because they are not snug fit. Screws too long anyway. Really disappointed. They would have come lose anyway after shooting. They were advertised as k-frame and they look great, but very disappointed. Back to ugly pachmyer rubber grips on my new 66-2. Will see what kind of customer service they really have (they were responsive informing me my original choice was unavailable). I think I will just go w/ magna's from midway or target grips ($70). Thanks Altamont the price of this revolver is just going up and up.

Were you using screws from your gun or did the grips come with new screws??

screws came w/ the gun. it was never snug...

regardless of the screws, which were too long. the rubber pachmyers are a great feel but just can leave them on a smith stainless.

I have boot grip style altamonts on 3 of my j frames and have no issues.Fit perfect,look great,well made.Love them.

I have a pair of Altamonts on my M65 and used the screw that came with the grips.

If I read the OP correctly he used the screw "that came with the gun", which may or may not be why the threads stripped in the grips.

I just installed a set of Altamont stocks on my 66-1 snubbie and they fit perfect and the screw was the right length. However, I did try to use a silver (looking) screw from a set of Ahrends, but it was about an 1/8" too long. I'll just live with the black screw. Contact Altamont. I bet they will help you with the issue!

Each of my Altamont grips I have bought direct from them came with three different length screws and the grips were a near perfect fit. I just ordered a set of their round butt magnas, I want to order another of their square butt magnas, and I love that they just added a whole bunch of new options to the K frame round butt selection. They also have a new grip checkering option for the J round butt boot grip that has me really tempted to buy one. But then I would need another J frame... Darn the luck.

+1, the grips include 3 different screws to allow for variance in the width of the grip frame.

I have a set of the RB "magnas" on a 10-14 and I love them, also have a set of their bonded Ivory N-frame square grips and out of the 3 screws, found one that fit perfect.

If you used another screw in the Altamont grips, you probably stripped the threads out. Altamont uses brass for the escutcheons.

I've purchased 2 sets of Altamont Grips over the last few months and the first set, which were for a J Frame, came with 3 screws but they were all too long.

I contacted Altamont and they sent me 2 or three more, which were also too long so I had to improvise.

The other set I got, this time for a K, also came with 3 screws and the shortest one almost sticks too far out the other side of the grip when snugged down.

I just got a set of Round Butt grips from them for my 686-6 and the fit was great. Also came with 3 screws and the shortest one fit fine. The only thing I don't like is the flat spots where the grips meet the backstrap. Seems to me they should be rounded to the strap not flat.

well its a wood grip so its not like there all going to be perfect.

I'd look at it that way and contact them about it, give them a shot to rectify it.

I ordered a set of j frame grips directly from altamont about a month ago, when I got them the brass insert the screw threads into was stripped. I emailed altamont and had a replacement set of grips at my door within 3 days, with a return label for the defective grips. They also came with 3 different lengths of screws to choose from. Altamont has excellent customer service in my opinion. I would definately order more grips from them.

I have never tried any of Altamont's S&W grips, but I have purchased dozens of sets for Colt Pythons and Rugers. I usually don't have any issues with them (and I love the way they look and feel), but every once in a while I will get a set that the screw will not thread into. I simply send it back and Altamont sends me a new set.

I have four pairs of Alamont grips for Smith revolvers. My favorite is the ivory polymer style against a stainless N frame.

Email response from Altamont has been spotty for me, but telephone service has been great.

I have many Altamont grips and just received two of their newer just this week. There grips are composite and therefore not soft like wood. Their specifications are exact. My experience has always found the fit to be the metal flashing(high spots) on the frame. You can feel it with you finger nail.
Get rid of it and they will fit perfectly!

Another problem is that i paid w/ credit card through a paypal system and now paypal is saying they don't recognize the transaction despite the fact that they responded to my email and accepted the dispute in my favor.

I've bought a number of grips from Altamont, and I've always been pleased with them.

An example of their customer service (or at least my experience with them): I bought a set of grips for one of my 1911s, and made a mistake in ordering a set that were not cut for an ambi-safety. I decided to try to make a cutout myself, and it turned out pretty good, if I do say so...but, there was one little place on the edge of the grip where it didn't turn out so well. No one else may have ever noticed it, but it bugged me.

I contacted Altamont and asked if they would sell me just the RH grip, and not a whole new pair. They asked why, and I explained what I had done. They said to send them back, and they would send me the right set. I told them it was my mistake in ordering the wrong pair, and then further by trying to cut them myself. They again said to send them back, and they would send me a new set. NO CHARGE!

That to me is excellent customer service.
